Veterans Prayer Breakfast Set to Honor Local Heroes in Madison

Madison is gearing up for a heartwarming community event that recognizes the bravery and dedication of our local heroes. The 18th annual Veterans Prayer Breakfast, hosted by the Heart of the Valley YMCA, will take place on November 1st at the Craig and Steven Hogan Family YMCA. This special breakfast has become a beloved tradition and serves as the official kickoff of Veterans Week in the Tennessee Valley.

A Morning of Honor and Gratitude

Families and individuals are invited to join in this meaningful celebration, with doors opening at 6:45 a.m. for a casual coffee social and check-in. The formal program will start promptly at 7:30 a.m., inviting attendees into an inspiring morning filled with gratitude and reverence. Attendees will enjoy uplifting musical performances, a heartfelt prayer ceremony, and an award presentation that recognizes exceptional service to veterans.

“The City of Madison, along with our educators and youth organization leaders, really shine in how they honor our servicemen and women during Veterans Week,” said Jean Downs, Vice Commander of Madison American Legion, Post 229. “All schools, including our Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, and JROTC units, are incredibly supportive—placing flags on graves, writing hundreds of cards and letters, and donating gifts for local veterans.” It’s clear that the community rallies together to make this a special time for acknowledging the sacrifices made by military personnel.

Inspirational Speakers to Share Their Stories

This year, attendees will be treated to not one, but two inspiring keynote speakers. CW5 (Ret.) Dr. Harry Hobbs, who currently serves as the Vice President of Employee Engagement at Huntsville Utilities, will share his insights alongside Lieutenant General Sean Gainey, Commanding General of the U.S. Army Space & Missile Defense Command. Their unique experiences promise to resonate with everyone present, making it a memorable morning.

YMCA’s Commitment to Veterans

“For over a century, the YMCA has been committed to supporting our veterans, and the Veterans Prayer Breakfast is a significant part of that mission,” commented Jeff Collen, Interim CEO of Heart of the Valley YMCA. “This event holds special meaning for us as we come together to recognize and honor the sacrifices made by those who have defended our freedoms.”

Community Participation and Support

The YMCA warmly invites the entire community to attend, reinforcing our collective gratitude for those who have served the nation. In addition to the breakfast, event proceeds will directly support the YMCA Military Outreach Program, which provides essential services and support to veterans and their families, including scholarships and discounted or free memberships.

To celebrate Veterans Week, the YMCA will also offer complimentary admission from November 1-11 for all veterans and individuals with valid Military I.D., along with their families, at all branches of the Y including Downtown Express YMCA, Southeast Family YMCA in Huntsville, and Hogan Family YMCA in Madison.
