In a powerful ceremony in Huntsville, Vietnam War veterans were recognized for their unwavering service and dedication. The event took place on Friday, marking the commemoration of National Vietnam War Veterans Day.
The Twickenham Town Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR) orchestrated the celebration. The event was dedicated to soldiers who served during the span of the Vietnam War, from November 1, 1955, to May 15, 1975. The ceremony took place at the Floyd E. “Tut” Fann State Veterans Home.
Participants in the event, consisting predominantly of fifty Vietnam War veterans, were bestowed with a certificate of appreciation and a commemorative pin as tokens of recognition from the Department of Defense.
The event saw Dr. Dorla Evans, the Regent of the Twickenham Town NSDAR Chapter, oversee the proceedings. She expressed that the occasion was an opportunity to extend much-needed appreciation to the servicemen who were not always given the same welcome home as their counterparts from other wars.
“It’s very meaningful to those of us that get to shake their hands,” Evans reflected, “And say on behalf of a grateful nation, thank you for your service, [it’s] very meaningful.”
In addition to the Vietnam War veterans, the NSDAR took the opportunity to also honor two World War II veterans with certificates of appreciation. These veterans reside at the Tut Fann residence.
One of those two WWII veterans, Robert Brazil, appreciated the community’s recognition. “When you have people like this who bring us together and make these awards, it really, really touches us,” Brazil noted with gratitude.
As the memory-laden ceremony came to a close, it left with it a successful statement of unity and respect towards the servicemen dedicated to preserving the country’s freedom and sovereignty.
