Huntsville, Alabama, is gearing up for its annual Veterans Day Parade, a much-anticipated event that honors the brave men and women of our military. This is not just any parade; it has blossomed into a week-long celebration, thanks to the vision and dedication of a few remarkable veterans who believed in its potential. Let’s take a stroll down memory lane and uncover how this tradition has evolved over the years.
It all started back in the early 1990s, when Retired Major Harold “Hal” Meeker took the initiative to launch what would become a beloved community event. Meeker, a decorated soldier, was a one-man show in those days. He organized everything from the lineup of participants to acting as the parade marshal, ensuring that every detail was in place. For nearly two decades, his tireless efforts transformed a small gathering into a town favorite.
Although Major Meeker passed away in 2018, his spirit continues to be woven into the fabric of Huntsville’s celebrations. His passion for honoring veterans lives on each year as the community comes together to pay tribute to those who served.
As the years rolled on and the parade started gaining popularity, another veteran stepped up to help. Retired Chief Warrant Officer 4 Ed Banville joined forces with Meeker, recalling how humble the beginnings were. “When we started, we said, ‘Hey, let’s do the parade,’” Banville shared with a smile. “We began in front of the old Hilton Hotel, and we’d line everyone up with a few friends from the American Legion.”
Banville fondly remembers those early days when the parade was a cozy gathering of friends and families, all eager to show their support for veterans.
But as Huntsville grew, so did the parade! Enter Retired Brigadier General Bob Drolet, who recognized that this event had the potential to become much more than just a one-day celebration. Drolet stepped in, leading the charge to expand the parade into a full week of events, ensuring that veterans received the recognition they deserved.
Under Drolet’s leadership, the event blossomed into a series of happenings including a veterans’ breakfast, dinner, prayer breakfast, and special ceremonies honoring Gold Star families and Purple Heart recipients. “Hal and Ed ran into some trouble as the parade grew,” Drolet explained. “So they came to us, and we took it under our wing to enrich the experience for everyone involved.”
In 1997, the parade received a significant boost when local sponsors joined the effort to help it grow. With live broadcasts of the event, powered by local media, the parade reached a wider audience. This partnership made a huge difference, pulling in more support for veterans from the local community.
Huntsville, being the proud home of Redstone Arsenal, takes immense joy in celebrating its military community. The annual Veterans Day Parade is more than just a festive affair; it stands as a powerful testament to Hal Meeker’s initial vision and the continuous hard work of countless individuals who ensure that this tradition thrives.
Looking ahead, Drolet hinted at even bigger plans for 2025, envisioning greater involvement from downtown businesses to further enhance what has become a signature event in Huntsville. The excitement is palpable as residents prepare to march alongside their veterans.
Mark your calendars and come join the fun! The Veterans Day Parade will take place live in downtown Huntsville this Monday at 11 a.m. It’s a fantastic opportunity to show your appreciation for the brave individuals who have served our country.
