Madison City, Alabama, is a bustling place, especially during school hours when kids are either heading to class or returning home. Recently, however, a concerning trend has emerged: unsafe driving around school buses. It’s an urgent issue that local law enforcement and bus drivers want to address, highlighting the importance of vigilance and responsibility on the roads.
For nearly a decade, bus driver Marilyn Hilton has been a vital part of the Madison City schools transportation team. Her job is not just about getting the kids from point A to point B; it’s about ensuring their safety during the ride. With each school year, however, challenges seem to grow as she witnesses more and more drivers behaving dangerously around school buses.
“Think of those kids on the buses as your kids; you wouldn’t want anyone to run them over or hit them,” Marilyn says, emphasising the human aspect of her job. It’s a heartfelt reminder that behind every bus, there are young lives at stake, lives that deserve protection during their daily commute.
Brent Patterson from the Madison County Sheriff’s Office shared that officers have ramped up enforcement due to the sharp rise in distracted driving around schools and buses. “Everyone is in a hurry these days, and there’s no reason to be in a hurry,” he warns, urging drivers to put their devices down and focus on the road. “You know there’s no reason to be driving down the road looking at your device because there are no do-overs.”
That’s a serious point. When someone is injured due to reckless driving, there is no chance to correct that mistake. The consequences can be devastating not only for the victims but also for the drivers. Each driver needs to realize that their actions can have serious ramifications.
Marilyn offers an eye-opening perspective on the significance of school buses in Madison City. “People need to realize that if our buses for Madison City weren’t driving out there, for our 100 buses, there would be like 3,672 cars to make up for that amount of drivers,” she states. This statistic puts into perspective the essential service that bus drivers provide – helping to reduce road congestion while keeping kids safe.
Marilyn points out that the buses give ample warning for drivers to stop: the bright flashing lights and the extended stop sign arm. She’s passionate about enforcing a zero-tolerance policy against violations. Indeed, the new cameras that will be installed on 20-24 buses are a significant leap forward in maintaining safety and accountability.
School bus violations can be costly—not only financially but also legally. Patterson explains that drivers caught violating bus stop laws can face hefty fines or even arrests. “At the end of the day, it’s not worth it,” he advises. Being reckless just for a few seconds of time isn’t worth the potential harm to a child’s life or the legal trouble that may follow.
Ultimately, both Marilyn and the local authorities are calling for a community effort to keep the roads safe. Everyone has a role to play in protecting our children – it starts with being aware of the surroundings when driving near school buses. So, let’s all do our part to ensure that Madison City remains a safe place for our children as they travel to and from school.
Remember, keeping our kids safe is everyone’s responsibility. Let’s heed the call and drive with care!
