In-state tuition will rise by 2.6% to 3%, while out-of-state rates will also increase. The board cites rising operational expenses and the need for competitive faculty salaries as reasons for the hikes. Students and families are encouraged to plan accordingly as this marks the first time in six years that consecutive tuition increases will affect in-state students.
In a recent announcement that’s sure to impact many students and families, the University of Alabama System Board of Trustees revealed plans to raise tuition for the upcoming 2025-26 academic year. This decision affects the three campuses across the state: Tuscaloosa, Birmingham, and Huntsville.
Here’s what you need to know: for in-state undergraduates, tuition rates will see increases of 2.6% at the University of Alabama (UA), 2.9% at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), and 3% at the University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH). Meanwhile, out-of-state students will also feel the pinch, with tuition rising 3.5% at UA, 3% at UAB, and 3% at UAH.
As if that wasn’t enough, there is an additional hike for the infrastructure fee, which will increase by $2 per credit hour. This might not seem like a lot at first glance, but when added up over a semester, it can certainly add to the total tuition bill.
So, what’s driving this decision? The Board of Trustees has cited significant rises in mandatory and day-to-day operating expenses as major factors. Increased costs related to data security, technology services, and keeping faculty and staff salaries competitive are all part of the picture. These tuition increases will also help cover the escalating costs surrounding state retirement contributions, retiree health insurance, and employee benefits.
This marks the first time in six years that in-state students will face consecutive tuition increases, following last year’s hikes which reached up to 4% for the 2024-2025 school year. For students planning their finances, it’s good to note that the announcement regarding tuition was made earlier this year, allowing families to plan better for their future costs.
With these increases, the average semester tuition is projected to be around $17,271 for non-residents at UA, $14,490 at UAB, and $12,695 at UAH. In contrast, in-state students will see their average semester tuition hover around $5,842 at UA, $5,820 at UAB, and $5,345 at UAH. Notably, optometry students from out of state at UAB will not experience any tuition hikes, providing some relief for that specific group.
To put it into perspective, the net tuition revenue for Alabama colleges stands at approximately $13,445 per full-time student, which is significantly higher than the national average. In fact, students in states like Michigan, Vermont, and Delaware pay even more than students in Alabama, but the increases still raise concerns for current and prospective students.
In making these decisions, the Board of Trustees took careful measurements against peer institutions to ensure that the tuition adjustments keep the University of Alabama System competitive in the higher education landscape.
As students and families gear up for the next academic year, it will be essential to factor in these upcoming increases. Understanding that education comes with rising costs is a part of the college experience. As always, it’s wise for students to remain informed and proactive in their financial planning to make the best of their college years.
