Sponsor Our ArticlesThe University of Alabama is undertaking a search for its next president, inviting feedback from faculty, staff, students, and community members. A series of listening sessions via Zoom will be held to gather opinions on essential characteristics for the new leader. Registration is required, and written submissions can be made until February 3, 2025. The search follows the announced retirement of current president Stuart R. Bell, and the advisory committee is committed to ensuring a diverse range of perspectives in the selection process.
Excitement is brewing in Tuscaloosa as the University of Alabama begins its search for a new president! The Presidential Search Advisory Committee made its long-awaited announcement on Monday, revealing plans to actively gather feedback from the university community on the qualities and qualifications they seek in their next leader. This is a golden opportunity for everyone to get involved and share their thoughts!
Are you a faculty member, staff, student, alumni, or even a local community supporter? The listening sessions are designed just for you! These sessions will allow participants to voice their opinions about what essential characteristics the new president should possess. With the aim of fostering a collaborative and inclusive environment, the committee is looking to hear from a wide range of stakeholders.
Each listening session is set to last for one hour and will take place via Zoom, making it super convenient for everyone to join from the comfort of their homes or offices. However, make sure to mark your calendars! Each session can host up to 1,000 attendees due to licensing limits, and registration is required to secure your spot and receive the meeting credentials. So don’t wait too long to sign up!
If you prefer to share your thoughts in writing, there’s good news! You can send your feedback to uapresidentialsearch@uasystem.edu until February 3, 2025. This is a fantastic way to ensure your voice is heard in carving the path for the university’s future leadership.
During the sessions, attendees will tackle questions about their ideal candidate’s essential traits and credentials. What do you think should be prioritized? Leadership skills? Academic experience? Community engagement? Your input is invaluable, and now is the time to make it count as the university prepares to experience a fresh wave of leadership.
This search arises from the announcement of Stuart R. Bell’s retirement in July after dedicating a decade to the role. Though his tenure will soon come to an end, the university is stepping forward with an organized and thoughtful approach to find the right successor. Leading the charge is Karen P. Brooks, a native of Tuscaloosa and a member of the UA System Board of Trustees. Brooks is eager to welcome a diverse range of perspectives as part of this committee.
The committee is composed of a mix of UA faculty, staff, students, alumni, community members, trustees, and UA system leaders, all working together to establish guidelines for the presidential role and evaluate potential candidates. It’s a robust team with plenty of insights to draw from! The search will also benefit from the wisdom of consultants Ann Die Hasselmo and Christopher N. Butler from Academic Search, who bring over 40 years of experience in higher education recruitment to the table, having successfully completed more than 2,600 searches.
As this exciting process unfolds, the UA community is encouraged to stay tuned and keep an eye on the UA Presidential Search website for further details. Your participation genuinely has the potential to shape the future—a future that will not only benefit the university but the students and community at large.
So mark your calendars and prepare to share your thoughts; this is an opportunity to participate in a vital decision for the University of Alabama, and everyone’s voice matters!
