Huntsville Prepares for the Charming Annual Tweed Ride This Saturday

Huntsville Gears Up for the Annual Tweed Ride

Huntsville, Ala. — This Saturday, if you find yourself driving through downtown Huntsville, don’t be surprised to see a swarm of cyclists decked out in vintage attire, looking like a scene straight out of an old-timey postcard. It’s time for the Tweed Ride Huntsville, an endearing blend of classic fashion, local lore, and community participation that has become a beloved tradition in the city.

From a Dream to Reality

The Tweed Ride Huntsville, a non-competitive cycling event, was born out of a desire to foster connection within the community. Brandy Baird, the mastermind behind the ride, shared a poignant story of inspiration. When Brandy and her husband lived in Washington, D.C., they attended the famous Dandies and Quaintrellas Tweed Ride. “We had the most beautiful day,” she reminisced. “Imagine being surrounded by 800 cheerful, stylish cyclists pedaling up Pennsylvania Avenue on a crisp autumn day.”

Fast forward to moving to Huntsville, where Brandy yearned to recreate that magic. “In March, I met Frances Akridge at a Seed Swap, and by June, I was sharing my vision,” Brandy explained. With Frances’ help, they engaged with Downtown Huntsville Inc. and thus, on November 12, 2017, the first Tweed Ride blossomed, starting with just 45 riders.

More Than Just a Ride

What makes the Tweed Ride truly special isn’t just the charming outfits but the eclectic mix of participants. Brandy describes the varied crowd as a gathering of “Tweed Ride travelers, vintage bike enthusiasts, history buffs, fashion connoisseurs, and quirky vehicle fans.” The event has since attracted riders from near and far, with about 30% traveling five hours or more to join the fun. “Seeing both local and visiting friends return year after year is one of the most rewarding aspects of organizing this event,” Brandy noted enthusiastically.

The ride itself covers approximately 7.5 miles and typically takes about 3.5 hours. It kicks off at Turbo Coffee and winds through downtown Huntsville, with delightful stops that include the Times building, Constitution Village, and Big Spring Park West—where riders can enjoy lunch before continuing to Huntsville Depot. The grand finale takes place at L’Etoile Patisserie, where participants can indulge in delicious pastries and vie for fun prizes.

A Touch of History

Along the route, cyclists will be treated to entertaining history talks featuring local figures like SueAnne Griffiths and Walker Skaggs. These stops not only celebrate the rich history of the area but also enhance the gathering’s community atmosphere.

A Vision for Inclusivity

Looking ahead, Brandy expressed an exciting vision for the future of the Tweed Ride. “I would love to see options like pedicabs or trolleys available,” she said, highlighting a desire for inclusivity. Year after year, some attendees express regret at not being able to ride, and Brandy wishes to change that. “It would be amazing to include those who can’t ride bikes but want to join in the festivities.”

In an ideal scenario, Brandy envisions a community picnic with live music, local vendors, and perhaps even a vintage market leading up to the event. “It’s all about bringing more people into this wonderful celebration,” she added with a smile.

Get Ready to Ride!

If you’re planning to join the Tweed Ride Huntsville, be sure to register beforehand and brush up on the bicycle etiquette. Riders should check in by 9:45 a.m., as the ride officially kicks off at 10:30 a.m. and continues until around 2 p.m. Prizes will be awarded for categories like Best Bike and Best Outfits after the ride.

This popular event draws inspiration from the original Tweed Run London, which started back in 2009 and has since sparked similar gatherings across the globe. So grab your finest tweed, hop on your bike, and get ready for a delightful day of cycling, socializing, and celebrating Huntsville’s vibrant community!
