Efficient Traveling Tips for Memorial Day Weekend

The weekend that marks the unofficial start of summer is finally here: Memorial Day weekend. It’s been a while since most people felt the thrill of travel, and from this year’s record numbers, it seems many have the itch to hit the road. The American Automobile Association (AAA) estimates that about 44 million Americans will travel 50 miles or more from home this long weekend. That’s up 4% from the previous year.

Early Birds Avoid Traffic

With an expected surge in vehicles on the road, Clay Ingram, a spokesperson for AAA, suggests travelers plan their trips wisely. “It’s best to be on the road early in the morning or late in the evening when there is less traffic,” Ingram recommends.

Prep Your Vehicle

Gas prices have marginally dipped with the state average at $3.20 per gallon for regular unleaded fuel. However, cost shouldn’t be the only concern when considering your vehicle. “Before you hit the road, make sure your car is in good shape. Check tire pressure, fluid levels, turn signals, headlights, wiper blades, belts, and hoses,” urges Ingram. He warns that something as mundane as a blown tire or a faulty signal can lead to critical delays.

Plan the Route

Planning your routes carefully and avoiding major metropolitan areas, if possible, can save you precious time. Dee Wise from the Huntsville International Airport echoed the same sentiment while providing travel tips for those flying this holiday weekend. Travelers should aim to arrive at the airport between 90 minutes and two hours before their flights to streamline check-in and security procedures, she said.

Air Travel Tips for Memorial Day

With over 3.5 million people expected to travel by air, Huntsville International Airport anticipates a packed holiday weekend. Passengers are urged to review regulations before packing, particularly with regard to carry-on liquids. Most critically, be ready for full flights and high capacity, as airports anticipate the busiest travel surge in 20 years.

Staying Updated

As everyone is eager to start their summer activities, remember that the key to efficient travel is being informed and prepared. Don’t forget to download your airline’s app to check for updates, in case of delays or cancellations, suggests Wise. It would also be beneficial to have the airport’s contact information handy for any last-minute questions or concerns.

You’re All Set!

Enjoy your official kickoff to summer! Safe and smart travel is the way to go this Memorial Day weekend. Traveling efficiently can make the difference between a memorable holiday and a stressful experience. Get ready and gear up for a wonderful start to your summer holiday.
