He kicked off his career at First Alabama Bankshares, where he held the role of head of national accounts and business development. In 1987, Harris took a giant leap by founding Merchant Capital, an investment banking firm that started in Montgomery but soon expanded its reach throughout the Southeast. His enterprise prospered and made significant waves in the finance world until it was acquired by Stifel Nicolaus Financial Corp. in 2014.
