Huntsville, Alabama — It’s a tough day for pizza lovers in the Rocket City as the beloved Terry’s Pizza has announced its closure for the second time. The classic local restaurant, which made a comeback in 2018, shared the news on their Facebook page today, thanking all customers for their support over the years.
This heartfelt message brings bittersweet feelings as it marks the end of the latest chapter in a long and storied history. Terry’s location at Bailey Cove Shopping Center, right across from the former Grissom High School, has officially closed its doors, effective immediately. This spot had been a revived Jenna, a standalone Terry’s restaurant with a dining room for the first time in over a decade. While its physical location may be gone, the signature Terry’s pizzas are still available for those who can’t get enough of that famous flavor.
Don’t panic just yet, pizza enthusiasts! Even though the restaurant has closed, you can still grab your favorite slices. Customers can find take-and-bake options or ready-to-eat pizzas at local grocery stores. Terry’s pizzas are available at Star Market locations, including the one at 702 Pratt Ave. N.E. and 12078 Hwy 231/431 N. in Meridianville, as well as at Reeves Drug Store in Pulaski, Tennessee. Isn’t it nice to know that a little bit of Terry’s will still be around?
Terry’s Pizza has been part of the Huntsville community since 1959, co-founded by Lou Pejza, who passed away in 2006, and his sister, Theresa. The original location served Chicago-style pies that won the hearts of many. After the original run of Terry’s came to an end, the name and recipes were picked up by Star Market, allowing the pizza legacy to continue in a different form.
Over the years, various locations came and went. The most recent Bailey Cove Road location opened back in 2018 and had a dining room that seated about 80 customers — a cozy space for families and friends to enjoy a meal together. The restaurant also had the convenience of a drive-thru, catering to the busy lives of its patrons.
Unfortunately, like many restaurants during the pandemic, Terry’s struggled with supply chain issues and staffing challenges. It’s a challenge that countless eateries are facing, leading to some iconic spots closing up shop. The closure of Terry’s is part of a trend we’ve seen lately in Huntsville, with other revivals, like the long-awaited Tip Top Café, failing to materialize.
While locals will surely miss the flavors of the Sticky Fingers pizza — a mouth-watering combination of sausage, pepperoni, and mushrooms under a layer of extra cheese — we must preserve the memories. The heart of Terry’s will live on through the memorable experiences shared over each pizza.
As we wave goodbye to Terry’s Pizza, let’s continue to support local businesses and enjoy what remains of its legacy until next time. Hopefully, the future holds more successful comebacks for our beloved restaurants!
