Athens, Limestone County Gets Broadband Boost via Spectrum’s Grant
In a significant move to boost broadband connectivity in rural communities, Spectrum has just announced that it has been awarded a substantial grant. The Alabama Capital Projects Fund’s grant, amounting to almost $4.6 million, will be channeled to support the provision of high-speed gigabit internet access to more than 1,100 residences and small business operators in Limestone County, Alabama.
The grant, combined with Spectrum’s notable allocation of $3.5 million, brings the total project investment to approximately $8.1 million. The joint effort is set to bring a substantial change to rural internet access in the region, fulfilling the state’s broader vision of a more digitally connected Alabama.
Alleviating the Digital Divide with Fiber-Optic Broadband
Limestone County is among the 23 grant recipients chosen to be part of Spectrum’s expansion plan. The plan focuses on broadening the reach of fiber-optic broadband infrastructure, specifically in areas scarce or deprived of high-speed connections. The statewide initiative will ultimately extend broadband access to almost 21,000 additional homes and small businesses.

Parker Moore. “I’m pleased that they were selected to build out the infrastructure we need to bring more homes and businesses access to high-speed internet.”
Spectrum’s Investment and Commitment
In addition to the state grant, Spectrum has demonstrated its commitment to serving the rural sector through its rural construction initiative. The cornerstone of this initiative is an investment of nearly $5 billion targeted toward previously unserved rural communities. This includes a significant $1 billion won in the Federal Communications Commission’s (FCC) Rural Digital Opportunity Fund (RDOF) auction.
The company’s RDOF expansion will provide broadband access to 1.3 million customer locations across 24 states, indicating a massive push toward moderating the digital divide in the country. Across Alabama, Spectrum currently serves a staggering 654,000 customers and employs over 1,200 residents.
