Huntsville has taken a significant step forward in its urban development plans with the recent approval from the City Council for engineering design contracts associated with the $65 million Pinhook Creek project. This ambitious initiative will feature a pedestrian suspension bridge, a linear park, and essential flood mitigation improvements.
The approved contracts include a substantial $1.9 million deal with Rosales + Partners for the design of the new ‘Skybridge’. This elegant cable suspension bridge will span across Memorial Parkway, providing a safe crossing for pedestrians and cyclists in one of Huntsville’s busiest areas. Urban and Economic Development Director Shane Davis emphasized the importance of the project, describing the bridge as “a work of art” that will undergo rigorous wind tunnel testing due to its innovative design.
As highlighted by District 3 City Councilwoman Jennie Robinson, this intersection has recorded a concerning number of pedestrian fatalities. Robinson noted, “That particular intersection has more traffic pedestrian fatalities than any other intersection.” Davis further echoed these concerns, stating, “We’re having about 1.6 a year, with highs of five. This is a crucial reason why our federal grant was highly competitive.”
Moreover, the project scope extends beyond the bridge. Huntsville has also commissioned an almost $1 million contract with Garver LLC, which will address Pinhook Creek channel improvements. This part of the project includes not only design features but also structural enhancements for pedestrian bridges, a railroad bridge, parks, and greenways, along with parking facilities.
The city aims to alleviate long-standing flooding issues that have impacted downtown Huntsville, stretching to the Five Points area. This multi-faceted project has already secured $50 million in federal and state grant funding, including significant contributions totaling $47.3 million from the Federal Highway Administration and an additional $5 million from the State of Alabama.
With plans in motion and funding secured, the Skybridge and accompanying improvements signal a commitment to enhancing safety and accessibility in Huntsville’s urban landscape, ultimately transforming the downtown area for residents and visitors alike.
