In a shocking turn of events, a student at Alabama A&M University was injured in a shootout with a campus police officer in the Knight Complex residence hall on Monday afternoon. The incident, which took place around 1:50 p.m., involved the exchange of gunfire between the officer and the armed student, leading to the student being taken to Huntsville Hospital for treatment of undisclosed injuries.
According to Alabama Law Enforcement Agency Sgt. Jeremy Burkett and Alabama A&M University Police Chief Montrez Payton, the campus police officer, whose identity has not been made public, was conducting a routine patrol on the fifth floor of the Knight Complex when he heard shots fired below him. As he responded to the source of the gunfire, he encountered the armed student in the southwest stairwell of the residence hall.
Chief Payton explained that multiple shots were fired during the confrontation, resulting in the student being struck multiple times. Fortunately, the officer escaped unharmed. Payton expressed sadness over the incident, noting the increasing frequency of such violent occurrences in today’s climate.
This is not the first time the Knight Complex has been at the center of a shooting incident. Just seven months ago, on August 22, the residence hall was the scene of another shooting that left two individuals injured and led to the arrest of two suspects. The previous incident was described as an isolated altercation between two individuals.
The recent shootout at Alabama A&M University has once again brought attention to the issue of campus security and safety. While the student involved in the incident is receiving medical treatment, the university community is left grappling with the aftermath of the violent encounter. As investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the shooting, students and faculty are urged to remain vigilant and prioritize their safety.
