TARCOG Senior Fun Fest Perseveres At A&M’s Agribition Center Despite Rainy Forecast

Madison County

Despite the gloomy weather, a lively event took the Agribition Center by storm last Wednesday, May 29th, 2024. Senior citizens from across Northeast Alabama gathered for a day of music, dance, games, and refreshments at the Senior Fun Fest, an event hosted by the Top of Alabama Regional Council of Governments, known locally as TARCOG.

Unpredicted Shift

In consideration of the adverse weather conditions, the event was moved to Alabama A&M University’s Agribition Center, a deviation from its traditional venue at Sharon Johnston Park. TARCOG’s Executive Director, Michelle Jordan, confided that the change was necessary to ensure the safety and enjoyment of the guests. Approximately 800 senior citizens turned up for the fest, demonstrating their resilience and the event’s popularity in the face of the dreary forecast.

Official Honorary Co-chairs

The fest co-chairs were notable TARCOG figures – Nancy Robertson, the former Executive Director, and Rene Breland, who served as the agency’s Director Of Aging Programs. Interestingly, this was the first regional event since their retirement and the first since 2019.

Support and Sponsors

The Madison County Commission, along with Commission Chair Mac McCutcheon and Commissioners Tom Brandon, Violet Edwards, and Steve Haraway were among the event’s co-sponsors. Their participation and support were evident, with the event being held in Brandon’s district. The Agribition Center staff played a substantial role in accommodating the last-minute change of venue.

Carnival Vibes and Activities

The event saw approximately 40 vendors and exhibitors offering a range of activities, from giveaways and snacks to health screenings. The atmosphere was likened to a carnival, with cooking lessons and photo sessions adding to the mix. “It was truly a fun day for our seniors,” said Jordan. “We saw a lot of smiling faces and that’s the whole goal of this Fun Fest. We want them to have a day that’s all about them.”

TARCOG’s main office is located at 7037 Old Madison Pike, Suite 450, in Huntsville. For information about future activities and events, TARCOG can be reached at 256-716-2457 or via their website, tarcog.us.
