Huntsville, AL, was abuzz with excitement as employees at the Marshall Space Flight Center came together to observe Safety Day on September 26. This annual event didn’t just signify a day on the calendar; it was a heartfelt reminder of how vital safety is woven into everyday life at Marshall.
Founded in the wake of the tragic Columbia accident in 2003, NASA’s Safety Day is about more than just rules and regulations. It’s a tradition where team members take a breather from their regular hustle to reflect on their work environment and their well-being. This year, festivities kicked off in Building 4316, with breakfast sponsored by Jacobs and Bastion Technologies serving as the perfect start to the day.
Marshall Space Flight Center Director Joseph Pelfrey welcomed everyone and shared some important insights. “It is crucial to ensure that each of us weaves safety into everything we do, not only at work but in our daily lives,” he said. Pelfrey took a moment to highlight how essential transparency is within the workplace. He emphasized that when employees feel safe to voice their safety concerns, it builds trust and fosters a culture of accountability. It’s this environment of openness that enables potential risks to be addressed promptly, ensuring a safer workplace for everyone.
The highlight of the morning was a talk from guest speaker Marceleus Venable, a seasoned purpose coach and author. Venable reminded team members about the importance of looking after their physical and mental health, encouraging everyone to take a moment and appreciate both their efforts and those of their colleagues. He urged everyone to practice self-compassion and recognition, urging them not to overlook the personal achievements that contribute to a safe working environment.
Of course, no Safety Day would be complete without an inspiring message from a seasoned astronaut. This year, Mark Vande Hei, who recently returned from a mission aboard the International Space Station as part of Expedition 65 and 66, was the keynote speaker. Vande Hei passionately discussed the importance of teamwork in NASA’s safety mission, saying, “We need a lot of talented team players to meet the challenges that we have for future space flights.” His message resonated with all, highlighting how collaboration is key to ensuring everyone is safe, prepared, and equipped to achieve their goals in space exploration.
The excitement didn’t stop there! Micah Embry, the chairperson for Safety Day 2024, presented an appreciation certificate to Vande Hei for his participation. During the day, Bill Hill, the director of the Safety and Mission Assurance Directorate, took a moment to recognize outstanding team members as well. The prestigious Golden Eagle Award was presented to Peter Wreschinsky, a dedicated employee of Jacobs Space Exploration Group, as part of the Mission Success is in Our Hands initiative.
More than 400 civil servants and contractors showed up to participate in this year’s Safety Day, where various booths provided valuable information on numerous safety topics, such as Emergency Management Services and fire protection. Pelfrey wrapped up the day by reminding attendees that as Marshall continues to lead in aerospace, it’s essential to refine procedures and anticipate potential hazards continuously. Safety, he stressed, is fundamentally tied to mission success. “Without safety, we cannot achieve the goals we set for ourselves in space exploration, research, and innovation,” he said.
With heartwarming conversations, recognition of excellence, and a strong emphasis on teamwork and safety, this year’s Safety Day at the Marshall Space Flight Center served not just as an event but as a celebration of the spirit of unity in ensuring safety for all.
