Madison County, Alabama, is buzzing with energy after a productive commission meeting on Wednesday morning. Residents can look forward to significant improvements in their community, including funding for local organizations, a shiny new community center, and essential upgrades to water infrastructure. It’s safe to say that there’s a lot to be excited about!
Leading the charge at the meeting was County Commission Chairman, Mac McCutcheon. He emphasized how crucial it is for the commission to keep up with the booming population in the county. “We’ve got to keep up on the infrastructure and improve on it,” McCutcheon stated, acknowledging the influx of new housing projects. As more residents call Madison County home, the need for reliable infrastructure has never been clearer.
“We can’t just sit back and just assume that what we have now is going to be adequate, we’ve got to prepare and plan ahead,” he added, stressing the importance of forward-thinking.
The commission approved two significant water infrastructure projects that will introduce a combined total of 11,000 linear feet of new water main line in the areas of Meridianville and Hazel Green. Additionally, an improvement project for the Hazel Green water well was greenlit. Altogether, these three projects have a price tag of $2.9 million, which will be funded through dollars from the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA).
It’s a big win for residents, as safe and efficient water supply systems are crucial to support growing neighborhoods and communities within the county.
But that’s not all! The county also took a moment to show some love to local organizations. Between the last commission meeting and this week’s meeting, a generous total of $1.9 million was allocated to support various community programs. This funding is sure to help many organizations continue to thrive and serve residents in meaningful ways.
Perhaps the most exciting news of the day was the approval of a bid for a new community center at Sharon Johnston Park in New Market. With a budget of $14.2 million, this project is set to transform the area and provide residents with a space to gather and recreate.
Commissioner Tom Brandon shared his enthusiasm about the upcoming community center. “The park already boasts several amenities like a campground, pool, and disc golf course. However, we are excited to add more amenities for residents.” This will include a double gym facility, an indoor walking track, and several rooms available for community activities.
Brandon highlighted that the northeastern part of the county is experiencing substantial growth, which makes this project even more necessary. “Our community resources and recs are really being pushed to the limits, and we think this will help alleviate some of those problems,” he remarked.
He also mentioned that construction could take about a year and a half, although residents can look forward to all the new features the center will offer in the near future.
With funding for vital infrastructure, support for local organizations, and the promise of a new community center, Madison County is definitely moving in the right direction. Residents have much to look forward to as these projects come to life, enhancing the quality of life for everyone in this growing community. Exciting times are ahead for the folks in Madison County!
