HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Renovations are set on eight transmission river towers as the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) takes measures to ensure longer power supply amidst escalating demand on the grid due to increased population influx into North Alabama. The towers spanning the Tennessee River in Limestone County have been operational since 1967 and are due for repairs, mainly on the concrete foundations, to prevent future corrosion issues.

Keeping the Power On

The TVA has prioritized the renovation of the transmission towers due to their crucial role in maintaining consistent power supply throughout the year. The process is set to be as seamless as possible, with no foreseeable power interruptions during the reconstruction phase.

Repairs began last month following thorough inspections that identified the need for renovations, particularly on the steel support beams encased within the concrete foundations of each tower. These beam reinforcements are responsible for enhancing the towers’ resistance from foundation and below, mostly underwater.

Towards Power Stability for Years to Come

The TVA’s renovation efforts aim to ensure that power supply reliability remains consistent for years to come. Construction on the towers is set to continue through December of 2025, underscoring the TVA’s commitment to reinforce sustainable and reliable power supply across North Alabama.

Clarissa McClain, a TVA representative, affirmed that the renovations were geared towards putting the consumer first. “There won’t be any interruptions to the service during the construction of this project. And it’ll just help to ensure that the reliability is there for years to come,” McClain said. Her statement also highlighted TVA’s priority to keep power supplies functional all year long regardless of population growth or increased power consumption trends in North Alabama.
