In a sudden move to improve postal services, Alabama Congressman, U.S. Rep. Dale Strong, R-Huntsville, has voiced the need for a separate postal processing and distribution facility in Huntsville, Alabama’s largest city. He believes it is a critical step to resolve the endemic issues of delayed deliveries and lost packages which haunt many residents in the region.
The congressman recently sent a letter to Postmaster General Louis DeJoy, highlighting the urgent need for a new postal facility in Huntsville. “For the entirety of the 118th Congress, USPS casework has been the most demanding of my constituent services department due to the substantial volume of residents voicing their experiences with shortcomings of the once-reliable USPS system,” stated Strong.
Strong emphasized that the heart of these inefficiencies originates from the excessively burdened Processing and Distribution Facility (P&DF) in Birmingham, Alabama. The issue has become pressing in recent years given the unprecedented growth of the Huntsville metropolitan area.
The Birmingham P&DF, as Strong points out, lacks the capacity to efficiently process and deliver mail within the state of Alabama. This Center has been servicing both Birmingham and Huntsville since the latter’s operations were consolidated with it back in 2011.
Since then, delays and lost packages have increased substantially in the area. The most significant issues involve the timeliness of priority mail and package processing, causing major inconveniences to the community.
Huntsville’s growth has been spectacular since the 2010 census, with the population surging from 180,000 to 226,000 by 2023, according to U.S. Census Bureau estimates. As the city continues to develop, current postal services, entirely reliant on the Birmingham facility, are struggling to meet the community’s needs.
“Currently, all mail in Huntsville is sent to Birmingham for processing. There are times when the backlog is so substantial that the facility brings in outside help and reroutes mail to other distribution centers,” said Strong. The delay these procedures cause is adding to the dissatisfaction among the local populace.
Post office clerks across different locations in Huntsville have communicated to the residents about the incessant delays. They believe these disruptions are solely due to mail getting stalled in Birmingham as it lacks the necessary operational capacity to handle the current volume of mail. Hence, the call for a new facility grows stronger every day.
The letter from Representative Strong stands out as a significant step in acknowledging and addressing the residents’ concerns. The assertion for the need for a new Huntsville processing and distribution facility now awaits the Postmaster’s response. In these trying times, such a move could go a long way in improving the state’s postal services and restoring residents’ confidence in them.
