Parking Deck Planned for Big Spring to Address Limited Parking Issues

Parking Deck Planned for Big Spring to Alleviate Parking Issues

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – If you’ve ever tried to park at Big Spring Park during the afternoons or weekends, you’re likely aware of the frustrations of limited parking. But there’s good news for both locals and visitors, as city officials have approved plans for a new **six-level parking deck** in the heart of the area.

Location and Details of the New Deck

The new parking facility will be situated in Big Spring Park’s **CityCentre**, directly behind the AC Hotel. This area is already in development, with additional hotel and retail options on the horizon. Initially, the project was slated to be a simple one-level deck, but after further consideration, city leaders opted to expand it to **six levels**.

Capacity and Planning for Future Growth

The parking deck is expected to add over **400 new parking spaces** to a region that has been struggling to accommodate increasing visitor numbers. Huntsville City Council District 4 representative noted that while the initial need might not fill every space, it’s a proactive measure for anticipated growth. “We’ve got new hotels going in adjacent to Big Spring Park and the Civic Center, so we think it’s smart to build now and not limit ourselves later,” he explained.

Ownership and Funding

The project will be owned by the city, which has already committed a substantial **$11 million** to its development. Half of the parking spots will be leased to the existing AC Hotel as well as the upcoming Moxy Hotel, while the remaining spaces will be open for public use.

Addressing Community Concerns

City representatives acknowledged that **parking challenges** at the park have been a topic of conversation among residents. “It’s not a crisis, but it’s something people mention – that sometimes they want to head downtown but can’t find a spot,” one council member stated. “So, we decided to tackle this head-on and develop something that meets our needs for years to come.”

Timeline for Construction

The project is expected to go out for bid in the coming spring, with construction anticipated to take around **seven to nine months** to complete once it begins. This timeline shows that Huntsville is actively looking for solutions to increasing demand in a growing community.

In summary, the new parking deck at Big Spring Park is a significant step forward in addressing the city’s parking woes and preparing for future development. Residents and visitors alike can soon look forward to a more convenient way to enjoy this beautiful part of Huntsville.
