Madison’s Old Greenbrier Restaurant: A Timeless Culinary Treasure Since 1952

Discovering Madison’s Culinary Gem: The Old Greenbrier Restaurant

Madison, Alabama, is home to a beloved dining destination that has been serving the community since 1952. The Old Greenbrier Restaurant stands proudly at the intersection of Old Highway 20 and Greenbrier Road, capturing the charm of days gone by while continuing to delight locals and visitors alike. This iconic establishment isn’t just a restaurant; it’s a piece of history!

A Blast from the Past

Picture this: it’s a Friday night in the 1960s. You’re cruising down a two-lane road that connects Huntsville and Decatur. As you drive, you hear the sounds of laughter and live music drifting down from above. Those catchy tunes are coming from the rooftop of the Old Greenbrier Restaurant, where bands used to battle for supremacy in the music scene. Jerry Evans, the current owner, fondly recalls, “There’s still people that come in every once in a while that say, ‘Yeah, I played in a band.’ Even a comedian once told me he won $50 performing up there!”

From Drive-in to Dining Paradise

Originally designed as a drive-in only restaurant—think Sonic but with its own unique twist—the Greenbrier encouraged its customers to enjoy their meals outside. Though times have changed, one thing remains constant: people still flock here for the food. While the highway has seen countless changes over the decades, the Old Greenbrier stands as a testament to comfort food done right.

Famous Hush Puppies and More

Ask anyone in the Tennessee Valley about the Old Greenbrier Restaurant, and one word will likely come up: hush puppies. These delicious little bites have been a staple for so long that they’re nearly a part of the restaurant’s identity! The kitchen runs through a staggering amount of onions daily just to season these fan-favorites, as Evans noted with a chuckle.

Meanwhile, the menu is a celebration of mouthwatering flavors. Sure, the hush puppies get all the fame, but the barbecued pork and fried catfish are also top players. From shrimp to hamburger steaks, Evans ensures that everything is homemade, excluding just their corndogs, which are a rare exception to their fresh and handcrafted approach. “Our pork skins and sauces are all made right here. That’s what keeps new customers coming in and old-timers returning,” he commented.

A Restaurant for Everyone

The appeal of Old Greenbrier is clear: it’s a welcoming place for all. “We have a very diverse clientele, always have,” Evans said. “Even more so now, with a lot of the same people coming here since the beginning of time.” This mix of seasoned regulars and curious newcomers creates an inviting, vibrant atmosphere, making each visit feel special.

Join the Legacy

Emphasizing their role in the community, the restaurant invites you to stop by and taste the tradition for yourself. Located at 27028 Old Hwy 20, Madison, AL 35756, the Old Greenbrier Restaurant has undoubtedly made its mark on local culture. So, when you swing by for a meal, don’t forget to capture the moment. Snap a picture of your delicious spread and share it on social media with the hashtag #AmbersAlabama—they love to see their guests enjoying the food!

With its rich history, mouthwatering menu, and welcoming vibe, Old Greenbrier Restaurant is more than just a place to grab a bite. It’s a cherished part of Madison’s story—and one that remains vibrant and flavorful to this day!
