Huntsville, Alabama played host to the much-anticipated 2024 North Alabama Workforce Summit on September 24, bringing together a vibrant community dedicated to improving the region’s workforce development. Taking place at the historic Stovehouse, the summit offered a full day of updates, insights, and plenty of opportunities to network with fellow professionals passionate about shaping the future of work in North Alabama.

Insights from the State of the Workforce Report

The summit kicked off with a presentation by Stephanie McCulloch, the executive director of North AlabamaWorks!, who shared the findings from the State of the Workforce Report. McCulloch unveiled exciting plans for new pilot programs aimed at “inspiring, preparing, and employing” Alabama’s workforce. Each component focuses on different needs:

• Inspire: Career exploration initiatives to ignite interest among job seekers.
• Prepare: Identifying career paths where skilled workers are urgently needed.
• Employ: A strong strategy to recruit members of the military and National Guard for various positions.

Did you know there are over 12,000 active-duty National Guardsmen in Alabama? McCulloch emphasized the value of tapping into this workforce potential. She also shared a vibrant video showcasing various careers in the space industry, highlighting the diverse opportunities available. There are plans to create such videos for other major industries in North Alabama, ultimately building a comprehensive “one-stop shop” online resource for job seekers.

The website myfutureinspace.com will serve as a start, focusing on careers in the space sector, with plans to expand to automotive, healthcare, construction, and more.

Economic Development Insights

Next up was Brooks Kracke, president and CEO of the North Alabama Industrial Development Association (NAIDA), who discussed the local economy’s rapid growth. He shared that North Alabama, while covering just 16% of the state’s land, is home to about 23% of its population. The 12 counties that make up North Alabama saw an impressive 66% of the state’s total population growth according to the latest census data. However, with growth comes challenges.

Kracke identified key issues, including a labor force participation crisis, power generation concerns, and a lack of quality industrial sites. Despite these challenges, he remains optimistic about Alabama’s future. “We are soon to be the #2 automobile-producing state in the nation,” he stated confidently, listing major automotive manufacturers like Honda, Hyundai, and Tesla, all of which have operations in the region.

Wage and Benefit Trends

Jillian Massey from Horizon Point Consulting presented intriguing findings from the 2024 Regional Wage Survey. The annual survey collects valuable data on wages and benefits from over 150 North Alabama companies, offering insights into employer practices and regional trends.

This year’s survey revealed that many businesses are adopting short shifts to accommodate parents’ childcare schedules, an important step toward increasing workforce participation. Interestingly, half of the surveyed companies still offer options for remote work, indicating a shift in workplace expectations. Notable was the rise in paid family leave, which has grown from an average of 5.5 weeks last year to 7 weeks this year.

The summit wrapped up with insights from Jim Page, who champions collaboration across North Alabama. He expressed the importance of teamwork among the various counties, noting that “regional collaboration” is indispensable for shared success. By uniting in their economic development efforts, North Alabama communities can create synergies that benefit everyone.
