Milwaukee, Brewers Take a Fall as Mets Advance to NL Division Series

The New York Mets’ journey through the playoffs took a thrilling turn last night, as they pulled off a dramatic come-from-behind victory against the Milwaukee Brewers in Game 3 of their National League wild-card series. After eight silent innings, the Mets finally woke up at just the right moment, bringing home a 4-2 win that punched their ticket to face the Philadelphia Phillies in the division series.

Quiet Start Erupts into a Ninth-Inning Frenzy

For much of the game, it looked like the Mets were heading toward an early exit from the postseason. Their bats were absolutely MIA for the first five innings, even as Brewers pitcher Tobias Myers pitched a stellar game, tossing five scoreless innings with two hits—both courtesy of Francisco Lindor. But the real drama unfolded in the ninth inning against Milwaukee’s closer Devin Williams.

With the score 2-1 in favor of the Brewers, the Mets found themselves in a must-score situation. Williams sprouted the first crack in his armor by walking Lindor, which was a big signal of what was to come. Brandon Nimmo then got a single that pushed Lindor to third base, and then it happened. Pete Alonso, with the poise of a seasoned vet, launched a three-run homer on an 86 mph changeup that startled the entire stadium and sent Mets fans into a frenzy.

Winker and Marte Add to the Insanity

But the madness didn’t stop there! As if Alonso’s bomb wasn’t enough, Jesse Winker got hit by a pitch, and in a show of sheer determination, he stole second base. Starling Marte followed up by doubling Winker home, widening the Mets’ lead to 4-2. Winker’s excitement upon scoring was palpable—he even spiked his batting helmet in a display of triumph that probably broke it!

“WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE? I AM!” he seemed to shout as he crossed home plate, embodying the sheer joy of the moment—a sentiment all Mets fans could share.

The Pitching Duel

While the Mets’ offense came alive at the end, it’s worth noting the excellent performances on the mound. Jose Quintana delivered an impressive six scoreless innings for the Mets, striking out five while allowing just four hits. Meanwhile, the Brewers had their share of strong pitching too, with Myers striking out five Mets batters and blanking them well into the game.

The Mets’ relief came from Edwin Díaz and David Peterson, who kept the Brewers from expanding their lead. Díaz worked hard, dealing with some early trouble but managed to keep Milwaukee off the scoreboard despite walking a couple of batters.

Brewers Make a Late Push

Before the Mets took over in the ninth, the Brewers finally found their rhythm in the seventh with back-to-back homers. Jake Bauers kicked things off with a pinch-hit homer followed by Sal Frelick blasting another, giving the Brewers a 2-0 edge. But it wasn’t enough to hold off the Mets’ furious comeback.

Next Up: The Phillies

With this exhilarating win, the Mets now gear up to face the Philadelphia Phillies in the NL Division Series, set to kick off on Saturday at 4:08 p.m. ET. While the Mets went 6-7 against the Phillies during the regular season, they did come off a less-than-stellar 1-5 record against the Brewers—so maybe there’s some good luck in the air this time around.

The Empire State Building was lit up blue and orange to celebrate this epic playoff victory. Met fans are buzzing with excitement, hopeful this momentum keeps rolling as they chase playoff glory.
