Sponsor Our ArticlesMazda Toyota Manufacturing (MTM) in Huntsville is undergoing significant changes, including leadership transitions, reaching a workforce milestone of 4,000 employees, and ongoing production capacity improvements. With a recent financial investment of $2.3 billion, MTM aims to elevate its production capabilities while contributing to the community through donations and employee development programs. The company is recognized for its conservation efforts, making strides in both automotive manufacturing and environmental responsibility.
In the heart of Huntsville, the automotive scene is buzzing with big news coming from the Mazda Toyota Manufacturing (MTM) plant. It seems that with workforce expansion comes some leadership changes! One of the founding members of the MTM leadership team has decided to step down from their role at the bustling Greenbrier auto plant. Meanwhile, another founding member has made a sensational return to the Limestone County facility. It’s safe to say that shifts are continually happening as MTM evolves.
Just this year, MTM has proudly reached its goal of 4,000 employees and continues to hire more talent to keep up with production demands. This growth was significantly boosted by the addition of a second shift on the Discovery assembly line. Things have been so efficient that they had to add this second shift on the Apollo assembly line less than a year after the Toyota Corolla Cross made its grand debut in the fall of 2021.
Here’s an interesting tidbit: MTM is the only manufacturer in North America that has taken on the ambitious task of producing both the Mazda CX-50 and the Toyota Corolla Cross. The assembly lines are aptly named Apollo and Discovery, honoring the significant role Huntsville played in the U.S. space program. When you think about it, it’s pretty cool that this automotive facility is also a nod to the city’s space heritage!
As of March 2023, the investments made by Mazda and Toyota in the Huntsville plant have hit a whopping $2.3 billion. The sprawling 3.7 million-square-foot facility has the capacity to crank out up to 300,000 vehicles annually, splitting production evenly between the two brands. But that’s not all; MTM has also recently been recognized with a Gold Certified status from the Wildlife Habitat Council for its commendable conservation efforts.
2023 marks a significant year for MTM as they celebrated the five-year anniversary of their groundbreaking. To commemorate this milestone, they hosted a huge donation event, contributing a substantial $110,000 to 20 local nonprofit organizations during the Community Foundation of Greater Huntsville’s Giving Tuesday event. This isn’t a one-time thing either! Earlier in June, MTM had already awarded $150,000 to 12 local nonprofits. Since their wonderful MTM Grant Fund began, they’ve managed to dispense a total of $340,000 to support various local causes.
In addition to community involvement, MTM is also heavily investing in its workforce. They have launched three internal training and development programs—LEAD Academy, NAVIGATE Academy, and the Production-to-Maintenance Program. The LEAD Academy offers valuable leadership development for team leaders, even emphasizing mental health awareness along the way. NAVIGATE Academy is perfect for assistant managers who are looking to sharpen their leadership skills at their own pace. The collaboration with the Alabama FAME Advanced Manufacturing Technician Program provides production team members with the opportunity to train for skilled labor roles while earning full wages and benefits during their part-time study.
In a smart move, MTM selected 12 team members to participate in the FAME Program. They’ll transition into maintenance or tool-and-die departments after two years of training, with salaries ranging impressively from $28 to $40 per hour.
With such exciting developments happening, from leadership transitions to a growing workforce and impressive community contributions, the future certainly looks bright for Mazda Toyota Manufacturing in Huntsville. It’s thrilling to see how far they have come and what lies ahead for this dynamic manufacturing duo.
