HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — There’s an undeniable buzz in the air at Alabama A&M University, and it’s all about band culture! For students here, being part of the band isn’t just about music; it’s about creating lasting memories and sharing a unique experience that’s very much a part of the HBCU lifestyle. The Marching Maroon & White is all set for a highly anticipated performance at the Honda Battle of the Bands, taking place on February 1st at the renowned SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles.
Our very own FOX54 reporter, Keneisha Deas, had the chance to chat with two enthusiastic band members brimming with excitement about the upcoming event.
The Marching Maroon and White has carved out a remarkable legacy, proudly representing Alabama A&M for nearly 135 years! With over 200 talented musicians in the band, their presence extends well beyond their home field. As they gear up for this momentous occasion in California, the spirits are high and enthusiasm shines through.
Junior saxophone player Taelor Hameen articulated her excitement, saying, “In February, we will be going to California! Yes, yes, yes, for the Honda Battle of the Bands.” She added, “It’s going to come before we know it for sure, but we are very excited. We’re preparing hard, long, hard hours.”
Indeed, beneath the thrill lies a rigorous preparation schedule. “It is very tense. It’s very hard, it’s grueling sometimes,” Hameen continued, “but the battles and stuff are always fun, and the games and stuff are always fun. So yeah, learning new music is really fun.”
Next, we met Nathanael Glenn, a junior who plays the mellophone, often described as a cross between a trumpet and baritone. “It’s like the big blow to the saxophone,” he explained. Glenn shared his journey with music, having started his musical career in sixth grade at just 11 years old! He has proudly been part of the Marching Maroon & White since his freshman year.
What brings him back, you ask? “My freshman class that I came in with, and even the people I meet now, the band directors, they really have the best interest at heart for you.” Beyond the beauty of music, Glenn finds that band life imparts valuable life lessons. “Band teaches you more than just how to play music. It teaches you how to be on time, teaches you how to pack, teaches you how to have expectations.”
With the clock ticking down to the big day at SoFi Stadium, both Hameen and Glenn are feeling confident and pumped. “We’re ready to come with it,” Glenn cheered. “We’re going to come, we’re going to come hard, come straight. The Marching Maroon & White Show Band is not to be played with!”
With an air of determination, he concluded, “Don’t underestimate us because we’re going to come and show you something brand new. I’m very excited!”
As they put in the hours of practice, the Marching Maroon & White hopefuls are excited to bring something special to their audience in Los Angeles. This event promises to be an exciting showcase of talent, camaraderie, and the irreplaceable spirit that the band embodies.
With all this preparation and energy, there’s no doubt that fans of band culture can expect a spectacular performance from the Marching Maroon & White!
