Five restaurants in Madison County, Alabama, posted health inspection scores below 85 in June, leading to mandatory reinspections within 60 days. These establishments were flagged for numerous violations ranging from incorrect food handling to unsanitary conditions.
What were some of the disturbing discoveries? Spoiled sandwiches featuring “fuzzy white residue,” drinks served from taps containing black buildup, and food stored at improper temperatures. Add in a large presence of flies in one establishment, and it’s a recipe for some of Madison County’s worst-rated dining experiences in recent memory.
These are the specific establishments that came under the county Health Department’s scrutiny, in descending order of their inspection scores:
With a score of 84, this mobile food truck located at 2537 Sparkman Drive, Huntsville, was found to serve wings and noodles at incorrect temperatures. Additionally, an unofficial commissary site was used close to the vehicle’s operating location during the inspection on June 27.
This site received an 83 for an array of issues discovered on June 25. Violations included a substantial presence of flies in the kitchen, food kept at incorrect temperatures, and the use of containers with cracked lids. The address is 930 Old Monrovia Rd NW Ste 3, Huntsville.
The chlorine solution at the warewashing machine registered zero parts per million, and many foods were kept at wrong temperatures, scoring the restaurant at 2317 Memorial Pkwy SW Ste 100, Huntsville, a lackluster 82 on June 7.
Scoring 81 on June 26 was the Circle K Store at 7606 Wall Triana Hwy., Madison. Here, sandwiches were spoiled and had “fuzzy white residue.” Soda nozzles were also coated with “black residue.”
Also scoring an 81 on June 7 was Hopper’s Bar & Grill at 5903 University Dr., Huntsville. Among the issues were food in the walk-in cooler that was expired by over a week and featured a “fuzzy green/white buildup.” “Black buildup” was found on the soda gun nozzles behind the bar, and the women’s restroom was out of toilet paper, with the hand sink behind the bar also lacking paper towels.
The failing health inspection scores are sure to hit these establishments hard, both in reputation and compliance. It’s crucial to note that poor health and sanitation practices don’t just affect customers’ immediate dining experience; they also pose significant public health risks. Proper steps must be undertaken to rectify these issues prior to the impending reinspection.
