In a heartwarming event on Thursday, the Madison City School Board gathered to congratulate the Student2Student (S2S) program at Liberty Middle School for its remarkable achievements. This fantastic initiative not only won multiple national awards in August but also snagged the prestigious title of Elite Team of the Year, an accolade that recognizes it as the very best S2S program in the entire nation!
The S2S program shines a spotlight on providing a friendly hand to students from military-connected families. For many of these kids, moving to a new school can feel daunting and lonely. The program helps them adjust and find their footing in a new environment. As Grant Jauken, a former Liberty Middle School S2S member and now a freshman at James Clemens High School, expressed, “We are making a change in this world, even if it’s piece-by-piece or state-by-state.”
Dr. Ed Nichols, the Superintendent, shared some striking statistics during the meeting. Roughly 25% of students in Madison City Schools hail from military families. This fact hits home for Dr. Nichols, who himself grew up as a military child. “There’s somebody there waiting on them,” he stated, emphasizing the ongoing support available not only when new kids enroll but also during tough times, like when a parent is deployed. It’s all about creating a safe space where these kids know they are not alone.
Jauken highlighted the importance of having someone to turn to in the first month at school, a time when everything feels new and a little scary. “It’s very important to have someone there your first month of school to make sure you adjust, find the people you connect with, and to make sure school is not a place to be feared of, to be scared of,” he said enthusiastically.
The significance of the S2S program goes beyond just easing transitions for military kids. It fosters a sense of community that builds lifelong friendships. When these students feel welcomed and included, they thrive! The program empowers students to become mentors, helping fellow peers find their way and feel a sense of belonging. That’s a superpower worth celebrating!
As Liberty Middle School celebrates this tremendous recognition, there is a shared hope that their example will inspire even more initiatives, not just in Madison but in schools across the country. By prioritizing inclusivity and support, we can all make a positive impact in the lives of students navigating the challenges of change.
The Student2Student program is a shining beacon of light, showing us all how important it is to reach out a friendly hand to those who may need it. With dedicated students like Grant Jauken leading the way, and the strong backing of school officials, Madison City Schools are making great strides in establishing a warm and welcoming environment for everyone. Together, they are proving that change can happen, one student at a time.
