Meet Jerome Villarreal: Huntsville’s Emerging Musician Making Waves with New Projects

Meet Jerome Villarreal: A Rising Star in Huntsville’s Music Scene

Huntsville, Alabama, has become a vibrant hub for musical talent, and one shining example is Jerome Villarreal. Originally hailing from south Texas, Jerome made his way to Huntsville in 2011 after finishing high school. Shortly after diving into college at the University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH), he teamed up with buddies Brandon Holmes and Chris Salib to form the alt-rock band Them Damn Dogs in 2013. Since then, Jerome has been keeping busy, performing all around Alabama and even independently releasing two albums, Let Loose in 2015 and Unpoetic Flavor in 2021. Excitingly, he has more music on the horizon!

Creating Music in a Pandemic

When the pandemic hit in 2020, many artists faced challenges, but not Jerome. He took the opportunity to connect with friends dynamic enough to form a new band called Dweeby. Featuring Wanda Wesolowski of The Wanda Band and Aaron Anderson from King Jeans and Jayne & the Huntsmen, Dweeby recently dropped its debut EP, aptly named The Dweepee. Released in October 2024, the EP reflects both the spirit of collaboration and the essence of fun in music.

Keeping Busy with Passion Projects

Jerome doesn’t stop with his original music. He’s also found a way to honor the iconic sound of the Beastie Boys through his tribute band, Beastie Goys, where he takes the lead guitar. But that isn’t all—he even dedicates some of his time to teaching others how to play guitar at a local shop, The Fret Shop. What a busy schedule!

What’s Spinning in Jerome’s Playlist?

Jerome’s passion for music extends beyond performing. He has been diving into the works of artists across all genres. Recently, he’s been captivated by Willow’s sixth album, empathogen, which dropped this past summer. He describes it as a mesmerizing blend of jazz, rock, and R&B that is woven together beautifully.

Reflections on his Musical Journey

“It’s really exciting and innovative to me,” he said. The album’s track “symptoms of life” resonates deeply with him. He feels it’s a reminder that none of us have it all figured out—life is all about evolving and finding our way. “We’re all just trying to find the light, whatever that may be for each of us.”

A Special Connection to Home

Interestingly, the song “no words 1 & 2,” an instrumental piece featuring eclectic sounds, has a meaningful connection for Jerome as it takes him back to his hometown of Beeville, Texas. “I was listening to it a lot during the Fourth of July weekend,” he commented, highlighting how being away from home makes you appreciate the simple moments with family. “Seeing how much everyone changes, especially after a long time apart, can be quite overwhelming,” he added, acknowledging the fast pace of life.

Why You Should Check Out Willow’s Album

For those curious about new music, Jerome encourages listeners to explore empathogen. “There are sounds you haven’t heard before,” he urges. “It’s inventive and does not play it safe. I think people want something fresh, and Willow definitely delivers.” With excitement, he shared his anticipation for what Willow will create next!

In the bustling music scene of Huntsville, Jerome Villarreal is a true gem, dedicated not only to sharing his art but also to inspiring others along the way. With new projects underway and an unwavering passion for music, it looks like we haven’t heard the last of him yet!
