In an exciting development for Huntsville, Keiretsu Forum, one of the largest global networks of angel investors, has announced its plans to expand into the area. The announcement comes after recent information sessions held at The University of Alabama in Huntsville’s Innovation to Invention Center, indicating a strong interest in fostering local entrepreneurial growth.
Founded in San Francisco in 2000, Keiretsu Forum has made a name for itself by investing over $1 billion into more than 1,400 startups. With investment sizes typically ranging from $1 million to $5 million, the firm is positioned to provide substantial support to early-stage companies in need of funding. Currently, Keiretsu operates 35 chapters across nine regions in North America, and its expansion into Huntsville reflects a growing interest in the area’s vibrant innovation scene.
At the forefront of this expansion is Howard Lubert, President of the Mid-Atlantic Area for Keiretsu Forum. He brings over 37 years of experience in private equity, including 13 years with Keiretsu. Recognizing the potential of Huntsville, Lubert has appointed Dick Reeves as an early-stage leader for the newly established Huntsville chapter. “Dick Reeves is the real deal and the single most important factor in our coming to Huntsville,” said Lubert, emphasizing Reeves’s critical role in the startup ecosystem.
During the informational sessions, Lubert pointed out a specific challenge within Huntsville’s entrepreneurial environment: a lack of investors willing to make smaller, initial investments. While most angel investor groups tend to cut checks between $100,000 and $250,000, Keiretsu targets later-stage funding needs. “The region is in need of support to bolster the funding side of its innovation ecosystem,” Lubert stated, aligning Keiretsu’s mission with local needs. Their entrance is expected to provide a much-needed bridge between founders and funders.
A potential collaboration with the University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH) is also on the horizon. Lubert sees an opportunity to teach students, especially those in graduate and exceptional undergraduate programs, the necessary skills for capital investment, such as due diligence. This initiative could prepare aspiring entrepreneurs and investors while fueling the local startup market.
With the collaborative efforts from Keiretsu Forum, local innovators now have a pathway to secure necessary funding while keeping their ventures rooted in Huntsville. Lubert remained optimistic following the meetings, stating, “We were happy to welcome seven accredited angel investors who joined us to gain deeper insights into the Keiretsu Forum’s process.” This interest reflects the potential for a thriving startup community in the area.
Huntsville-area entrepreneurs keen on joining the Keiretsu Forum are encouraged to visit the firm’s regional website for the southeastern United States. The online application process is straightforward, and interested parties can reach out directly to Reeves at DReeves@KeiretsuForum.net or Barry Etra at Betra@KeiretsuForum.net for more information. Keiretsu is expected to establish a working chapter in Huntsville by the fourth quarter of this year, marking a new era of opportunity for local startups.
