HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – In an effort to secure a spot on the presidential ballot this November, a dedicated group of volunteers in Huntsville is working tirelessly to gather signatures for independent candidate Robert Kennedy Jr.. With a requirement of 5,000 signatures to make the ballot, the urgency is palpable as they approach the deadline.
Amy Castor, alongside other community members, has been actively petitioning at local hotspots such as Lowe Mill and the downtown public library. Their mission is clear: to educate voters on the viability of third-party candidates while garnering support for Kennedy’s campaign.
Castor emphasized a common belief among voters that casting a ballot for a third-party candidate is akin to wasting a vote. Drawing parallels with Ross Perot’s campaign in 1992, she argued that the idea is misinformed. “People felt like it was a wasted vote. The exit polls showed that if people had voted for Ross Perot because they believed in him, he would have won,” she stated.
According to her, if Perot had garnered support from those who believed in his vision, he could have potentially captured up to 40 percent of the vote, while the major candidates, Bush and Clinton, would have only reached about 30 percent.
The deadline for submitting signatures is fast approaching, with just a few days left until August 5th. The volunteers are racing against time, reaching out to individuals in various community locations to secure the necessary support for Kennedy’s inclusion on the ballot.
This grassroots movement has garnered attention and sparked conversations among voters in the area. With the upcoming election drawing near, the group remains hopeful that more residents will reconsider their stance on voting for third-party candidates and recognize the impact their choices can make.
As the volunteers continue their efforts, they invite the Huntsville community to engage in this pivotal moment in the electoral process.
