Huntsville, Alabama – In a heartfelt tribute to local heroes, U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville honored Command Sergeant Major Kevin Harkey as the August “Veteran of the Month.” This recognition was made public through a video shared on Senator Tuberville’s social media on August 3.
Command Sergeant Major Harkey boasts an impressive 31 years of service in the U.S. Army, with deployments in various challenging locations including Honduras, Iraq, and Kosovo. Through his extensive military career, Harkey has exemplified the core values of leadership, commitment, and community service.
Beyond his military accomplishments, Harkey is dedicated to shaping the future of young people within his community. Notably, he authored a ‘study guide’ aimed at aspiring soldiers on the occasion of the 30th Anniversary of his enlistment. He emphasizes the importance of being present for those he mentors, a principle that remains central to his approach in both military and civilian life.
Even after retiring from service, Harkey continues to inspire and guide youth in Huntsville. He actively mentors students at local community centers through his involvement with Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity. His outreach efforts specifically target teenagers aged 10-17, many of whom come from challenging backgrounds, helping them find direction and purpose.
Senator Tuberville expressed admiration for Harkey’s unwavering dedication both in uniform and within the community, stating, “Our veterans embody the ideals of ‘team’ and ‘family’ that are taught in our great military.” The senator has committed to honoring a different Alabama veteran each month, showcasing their contributions and sacrifices.
This recognition serves not only to celebrate Harkey’s achievements but also to highlight the vital role veterans play in building strong communities across Alabama.
