Huntsville Utilities: Animal behind large outage late Tuesday night

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Huntsville Utilities is making progress after an outage left thousands without power late Tuesday. As of 11:15 p.m, about 5,600 customers remain without power, down from over 20,000. Impacted customers are located in an area from the Tennessee state line south to Sparkman Road and from Jeff Road east to Memorial Parkway.

Cause of the Outage

“Initial reports from crews in the field indicate an animal got into a primary substation that distributes power to other substations,” Todd Long with Huntsville Utilities wrote in an e-mail. “This animal made contact with electrical equipment that caused the main feeder breaker to open.”

Repair Work

Responding crews repaired the equipment and reset the feeder breaker. Crews are working to restore power to the customers who remain impacted.

Current Situation

“We are working to get all customers restored as quickly and safely as possible,” said Long.

Stay Informed

Customers are advised to check Huntsville Utilities’ website and social media channels for updates on the restoration progress.

Conclusion

Huntsville Utilities urges customers to report any power outages or concerns to their customer service line. They appreciate the patience of those impacted by the outage and assure that they are working diligently to resolve the issue.
