City of Huntsville Announces Trash Collection Rate Increase

Residents of Huntsville, Alabama, brace yourselves! Come January 1, 2025, you’ll notice an adjustment in your monthly bill for trash collection services. The City Council has officially sanctioned a rate increase, marking the first hike in nearly 15 years. If you’re wondering what this means for your wallet, keep reading!

With a nod to the rising costs affecting everyone, Chris McNeese, the Director of Public Works, explained, “We have resisted rate increases for years but the time has come when we can’t delay this any longer.” According to him, increased expenses are beginning to influence the city’s capacity to provide essential services, especially with more than 70,000 households relying on their sanitation department for weekly trash collection. McNeese continued to highlight the dedication of the department, saying, “Our sanitation department works hard and takes great pride in meeting the needs of residents.”

Breaking Down the New Rates

So, what will these new rates look like? Here’s a quick breakdown:

  • Residential Rates:
    • From $16.50 per month to $21.50 starting January 2025
    • Increasing to $24.50 on January 1, 2027
    • And again to $27.50 on January 1, 2029
  • Extra Cans:
    • From $3 per can per month to $9 in January 2025
    • Then, $12 in 2027
    • And $15 in 2029
  • Low-Income Customers:
    • Rates remain steady at $10 per month
    • However, extra can rates will rise from $3 to $6 in January, $9 in 2027, and $11 in 2029
  • Commercial Standard Rates:
    • From $29 per month to $37 in January 2025
    • Then, up to $41 in 2027
    • And rising to $45 in 2029
  • Excessive Bulk Waste Charge:
    • From $45 per five cubic-yard overage to $55 in January 2025
    • Increasing to $60 in 2027
    • And hitting $65 in 2029

Service Details

To keep things efficient, Huntsville trash collection trucks cover 25 daily routes. Plus, there are another 25 boom trucks that come along to pick up yard debris, empty boxes, and other curbside items. This ensures that your neighborhood stays clean and well-maintained!
