Residents engaging in a transportation planning meeting in Huntsville.

News Summary

The Huntsville Area Metropolitan Planning Organization is seeking community input on the 2050 Long-Range Transportation Plan, involving upcoming meetings for residents to voice their opinions. The plan includes funding for key transportation projects over the next 25 years, and participation is encouraged to help shape Huntsville’s transit future.

Huntsville Seeks Your Input on Transportation Future

Exciting news for all the residents of Huntsville! The Huntsville Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) is rolling up its sleeves and diving deep into the future of transportation in our area. They’re inviting everyone to join in and share their thoughts on how to make our highways and public transit even better! This input is crucial as they forge the 2050 Long-Range Transportation Plan (LRTP).

Community Meetings are Underway!

Earlier this month on February 5, the MPO kicked things off with the first of several community meetings at the North Huntsville Public Library. If you missed it, don’t worry! There are two more meetings scheduled later this February. This is a fantastic opportunity for you to voice your thoughts and be part of the conversation about transportation in Huntsville.

With transportation being such a vital aspect of our daily lives, participating in these meetings could be just what we need to mold the future of travel around here. Plus, our input will be taken seriously—public comments will be reviewed by the MPO Policy Board in March before they cast their votes on the LRTP.

What’s Cooking in the 2050 LRTP?

The 2050 Long-Range Transportation Plan is designed to outline both funded and aspirational transportation projects for the next 25 years. And here’s the kicker—having a project included in this plan is essential for it to qualify for any state or federal funding. Every five years, the MPO refreshes this plan, which means we have a unique chance to shape the future every half-decade.

Currently, a draft version of the 2050 LRTP is available for public review, so get involved and see what’s being proposed. If you can’t make it to the meetings, you can still make your voice heard by sending your thoughts via email at longrangeplanning@huntsvilleal.gov.

Transit Improvements on the Horizon

Some of the exciting ideas being tossed around include implementing a bus rapid transit system and possibly even shifting focus towards a light rail system. A bus rapid transit system is particularly promising since studies indicate that it’s significantly less expensive than light rail systems, with costs ranging from $3 million to $50 million versus a staggering $230 million per mile for light rail. It only makes sense—who wouldn’t want to save a few bucks while enhancing mobility?

Proposed transit improvements focus on better connections to downtown, the U.S. 72 corridor, Huntsville International Airport, and key employers like Mazda Toyota and Amazon. With the region’s growth and increasing demands on our public transport, these plans could set the stage for a more connected Huntsville.

What’s Already Happening?

Don’t forget, Huntsville has already made some strides in this area with the introduction of the Orbit bus routes! They’re also assessing the possibility of extending service hours based on a recent study about short-term changes in our transit system. It seems the MPO is focused on connecting the dots and creating a reliable and extensive transport network.

Get Involved!

Let’s not underestimate the power of our voices in shaping how we travel in and around Huntsville. Whether it’s using public transit to get to work or taking a leisurely ride downtown, your feedback is invaluable. Join the community meetings, review the draft LRTP, and don’t hesitate to write in with your thoughts! Together, we can drive the future of Huntsville’s transportation.
