Huntsville City Schools Preparing for the New School Year

Superintendent Reveals No New Details Regarding recent Cyber Attack and its Impact on Huntsville Schools

HUNTSVILLE, Ala – The Huntsville City Schools district is in preparation mode for the upcoming academic year. The district’s Board of Education met earlier this week where the agenda was the discussion of several key changes and action plans for the start of the forthcoming school year.

Increase in Meal Price and Introduction of Handle with Care Program

Notably, one of the proposed changes includes an increase in the price of meals offered in the school cafeterias, a change that is applicable for faculty and staff members. In addition, Huntsville City Schools is contemplating the adoption of the Handle with Care Program, a measure already in use by neighbouring school boards. This program empowers first responders to alert schools when a student happens to be involved in a distressing incident at home.

“We are genuinely thrilled about the Handle with Care initiative”, expressed Dr. Clarence Sutton Jr., the Superintendent of Huntsville City Schools. “It’s developed in partnership with numerous agencies here in Huntsville. It’s a testament to the cohesive efforts of Huntsville City Schools and the breadth of resources working collectively to safeguard and support our students.”

Recent Cyber Attack on Alabama State Department of Education

In the meeting, Dr. Sutton also tackled the issue of the recent cyber-attack on the Alabama State Department of Education. He confirmed that the details of whether the data of Huntsville City Schools was compromised in the breach remain unclear at this point in time. However, he quickly assured that maintaining and constantly upgrading the district’s security systems to protect their data is one of their top priorities.

The superintendent also added that the data breach has had no impact on their teacher hiring process. The board of education announced at the meeting that they anticipate more than 150 new hires for the upcoming academic year.
