HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – School leaders address threat concerns at Mountain Gap School

Mountain Gap School parents met with school leaders Tuesday morning about threats made by a student the week before.

Parent’s Concerns

“I found out that this was a week ago,” one parent said at the meeting. “You’ve got to be kidding me.” Parents said over 70 concerned parents were at the meeting.

Confusion and Vagueness

Parent Brian Hyatt expressed his confusion after pulling his child out of school. “They said they have these processes in place, there was no threat, but yet there was an investigation,” he said.

Lack of Transparency

An email was sent to parents last week stating that a child made a threat, but the threat was deemed not credible. Some parents, like Michele Crook, had to learn about the threat from their children days after the incident.

Student’s Presence on Campus

Parent Bernard Staten raised concerns about the student who made the threats still being on campus. He emphasized the importance of removing the problem until it can be fully addressed.

School’s Response

The district announced additional security measures, including the implementation of Evolv weapons detection at the school. They also emphasized the need for ongoing collaborative communication with parents throughout the investigation process.

Parent’s Response

Staten expressed some relief following the meeting but highlighted the need for more updates and transparency during threat investigations. He stressed the importance of feeling informed and reassured about their children’s safety.

Call for Action

Staten urged the school to provide clear and timely updates, demonstrating proactive measures to address concerns and ensure the safety of students and staff.

Conclusion

The meeting between Mountain Gap School parents and school leaders addressed the concerns surrounding the recent threats made by a student. With additional security measures being implemented and a commitment to ongoing communication, parents are looking for transparency and action to address safety concerns at the school.
