Huntsville Celebrates Pride in Two Unique Ways
Rocket City Comes Alive with Color and Community Spirit
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — Today was a vibrant celebration of Pride in the heart of the Rocket City! For many, the Orion Amphitheater buzzed with excitement as folks came together to celebrate LGBT History Month. But just a thirty-minute drive south, another gathering was in the works, and it turned out to be a gathering full of care and community spirit.
A Community Picnic Over Political Differences
A few families we spoke to expressed how crucial it was for them to host this picnic. Organizers saw a clear need for a welcoming space because of the stir caused by recent transphobic accusations aimed at the political group attending the Orion Pridefest. In less than 24 hours, the community had rallied behind the idea for a picnic that promised to be inclusive, inviting everyone—regardless of who they love or how they identify.
This was largely prompted by the presence of the Log Cabin Republicans at the Orion Pridefest. The Huntsville chapter, which has only been established this year, has caused quite a stir within the community. Their chapter president, Andy Blalock, has shared views that have upset many people, especially with regards to trans youth.
Voices from the Picnic
One couple who attended the picnic, Briar Wolf and her wife Deanna, made it clear that the situation at the Orion Amphitheater was distressing. While Rocket City Pride released a statement clarifying the requirements for political groups wanting to participate, it didn’t appease everyone. Briar shared her feelings, saying, “The statement was not satisfactory because, for us, satisfactory would have been disinviting this group and never allowing them at any pride events ever again.”
Deanna chimed in with the sentiment that Pride is fundamentally about the people. She stated, “It’s about every single letter in the LGBTQIA plus. And we won’t drop any letters.” The couple’s passion was palpable, as they emphasized the need for protection and support for trans youth—especially in light of today’s political climate.
A Special Anniversary Celebrated
Interestingly, Briar and Deanna chose the picnic to celebrate their 12th wedding anniversary. When asked what their next steps would be, Deanna expressed a hopeful outlook: “We’re going to find out what the need is and then we’re going to find out what needs to be done to fill it. Clearly, we’re capable of doing that.”
The Community’s Response
The gathering was more than just an event; it was a powerful reminder of community solidarity. Folks expressed their concerns and shared stories, reinforcing that Pride is about love, support, and amplifying every voice.
