Huntsville Mourns the Loss of Music Educator and Conductor Gary Stuart Parks

Late Thursday night, Huntsville lost a true gem in the arts community as Gary Stuart Parks, an esteemed music educator and conductor, passed away at the age of 81. With over four decades spent in this vibrant city, his contribution to the world of music has left a mark that will not soon be forgotten.

A Life Dedicated to Music

Baltimore-born, Gary Parks first saw the light of day on August 13, 1943. Growing up under the loving guidance of his parents, Charlotte and Powell Parks, Gary developed a passion for music that would shape the rest of his life. He graduated from the Baltimore Polytechnic Institute and went on to hone his talent at Boston University, where he studied Oboe Performance and met the love of his life, Janet S. Hollows, in 1966.

His commitment to music education only deepened after his wedding, during which he became a Fellowship Student at the acclaimed Berkshire Music Center at Tanglewood. His journey took a patriotic turn when he served in the United States Air Force, bringing his skills to life as an oboist in the Air Force Band of Washington, D.C.. His time in the military took him on tours across Europe and South America, helping him grow as a musician and a conductor.

Impressive Career Path

After four fulfilling years in the Air Force, Gary relocated to New York, where he earned a master’s degree in Conducting and Oboe Performance from Ithaca College. His impressive repertoire included conducting various symphonic, chamber orchestras, operas, and youth orchestras. His travels took him from Florida to Alabama, spreading his love for music and education in every community he touched.

In Jacksonville, FL, he was an integral part of the Jacksonville Symphony as an oboist and English horn player while also leading the Greater Jacksonville Youth Symphony and teaching strings in Duval County schools. Gary’s commitment to fostering the next generation of musicians did not stop there; he conducted the Cumberland Orchestra at the Sewanee Summer Music Center for five years, inspiring countless young talent.

Huntsville: His Home and Legacy

In 1980, Huntsville welcomed Gary with open arms, where he continued his legacy by conducting the Huntsville Youth Orchestras, Decatur Chamber Orchestra, Huntsville Opera Theater, and the Shoals Symphony. Perhaps one of his crowning achievements was founding the METRO Youth Orchestra in 1987, where he served for two decades, leading the group to perform at the prestigious Carnegie Hall three times.

Parks wasn’t just a talented musician; he was also a dedicated teacher in the Huntsville City Schools for 25 years, shaping the lives of around 300 students each year. Many of his students went on to enjoy professional music careers, a testament to his impactful teaching style and passion for the art.

A Full Life

Balancing his dedication to music, Gary was also an avid sports fan, cheering for his beloved Baltimore Orioles and the Baltimore Ravens, as well as enjoying time spent at Chesapeake Bay. He leaves behind a loving family, including his wife Janet, three children (Kim, Bill, and Sara), five grandchildren, and many cherished relatives.

Remembering Gary

In lieu of flowers, Gary’s family has requested that donations be made to the Microwave Dave Music Education Foundation. A memorial service is being planned for the spring, where the Huntsville community will gather to celebrate the rich life and incredible legacy of Gary Stuart Parks, forever remembered as a pillar of music education.
