This long-awaited project is gearing up to start the design phase early next year, and construction for the first few buildings is expected to kick off in 2025. Thanks to a fantastic $50 million grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), Huntsville is primed for a major transformation.
The City of Huntsville snagged this shiny Choice Neighborhood Implementation (CNI) Grant, which aims to turbocharge a $350 million investment in redeveloping the area. Mill Creek, located just west of Memorial Parkway along Governors Drive, will be transformed into a vibrant, mixed-income community. The revitalization plan promises to bring in a ton of valuable resources and services to residents and the surrounding community.
The Mill Creek development isn’t just about new buildings—it’s about creating a lively, well-rounded community. Plans include constructing workforce housing along with essential medical and childcare services. Residents can also look forward to new retail spaces where they can shop and socialize. This project aims to uplift the community by providing high-quality living spaces and access to necessary amenities.
To kick things off, Urban Strategies Inc. (USI) has been brought on board to assist in providing community support services. This means focusing on job placements, skills training, and childcare initiatives that are crucial for helping residents secure long-term economic stability.
The battle for better living conditions in Mill Creek has finally taken a step in the right direction. The project will replace distressed public and assisted housing with approximately 580 new residential units, offering a mix of options for families and individuals. Additionally, Huntsville Hospital will contribute to the housing needs by providing accommodation for its staff.
The project is set to unfold in phases, starting with the construction of an 84-unit Universal Design building focused on accessibility. Next in line is a 100-unit senior housing development, which will be followed by additional family housing units. In total, there are plans for around 700 new units alongside recreational areas and greenways that will invite the community outdoors.
The buzz doesn’t stop there! Plans also include a brand new Food City and an innovative “Smart Space” facility that will feature early learning classrooms. These additions aren’t just great for aesthetics—they’re designed to enhance the overall quality of life for residents and foster community engagement.
