Huntsville Prepares for the Inspiring Liz Hurley Ribbon Run on October 19

Huntsville Gears Up for the Annual Liz Hurley Ribbon Run

In the heart of Huntsville, excitement is brewing as the annual Liz Hurley Ribbon Run approaches! Slated for October 19 in downtown, this event is not just a race; it’s a powerful gathering that honors those affected by breast cancer while promoting community awareness and support.

A Legacy of Empowerment

Did you know that Huntsville Hospital Breast Cancer Center holds the title of being the busiest mammography site in all of Alabama? Thanks to the funds raised through this annual run, both Huntsville and Madison Breast Centers are now fully equipped with 3D mammography technology. This is a significant advancement, especially for detecting breast cancer in women with dense breast tissue.

The heart and soul of this initiative is none other than Liz Hurley, a veteran news anchor and a proud breast cancer survivor. After receiving her diagnosis back in 1998, Liz felt a profound urge to give back to her community. “My breast cancer diagnosis changed the course of my life. I wanted to create something that would not only increase awareness but also raise enough money to truly impact the care of patients,” she shared.

A Dream Turned Reality

The very first Ribbon Run took place back in 2004, with only 1,000 participants hitting the pavements of downtown Huntsville. Fast forward to the latest event, where over 6,000 walkers and runners participated, showcasing just how far this dream has come. Liz credits the outpouring of support from the community and the partnership with Huntsville Hospital Foundation and the Huntsville Track Club for the growth of this event.

“It started as a small dream and thanks to our generous community, it is now the largest 5k in North Alabama,” said Hurley. Participants dress in their best pink gear, including vibrant tutus, turning the event into a fun-filled morning of inspiration and healing.

Making a Significant Impact

Last year, the run raised a staggering $472,000, which went towards essential upgrades and programs at the Breast Center. These funds are crucial, as they target the top-priority needs for the clinic. This year, the focus will be on implementing significant software upgrades for the 3D mammogram machines, ensuring that mammographic images are clearer, leading to better diagnoses.

One of the exciting upgrades includes the Clarity HD system, which promises to enhance the current 3D technology. “This improved technology will almost certainly lead to improvements in cancer detection and will also likely decrease the number of false positive results,” Hurley explained.

Beyond the Race: Support Programs

While the funds raised make a huge impact on equipment, they also play a vital role in the supportive programs offered by Hurley’s Foundation. The Surviving and Thriving classes are designed to provide breast cancer survivors with support and resources for their post-treatment journey. Over 38 groups with a total of 399 women have graduated from this eight-week program, which Hurley describes as a “breast cancer boot camp.”

“It helps women jumpstart their new life as a survivor,” Hurley added. Her own journey underscores the importance of awareness; she discovered her lump through diligent self-examer and yearly mammograms, knowing well the risks as her mother was diagnosed at just 30.

Documenting the Journey

As the race day approaches, Liz reflects on the emotional moments she witnesses at the finish line. She beams with pride as she greets each participant, noticing the shared sense of victory and camaraderie among survivors and supporters alike. “They cross the finish line, and you can visibly see they feel as if they won the lottery. If you ask them, it’s the line of demarcation: before cancer and after,” she said.

Be Your Own Advocate

As we gear up for this year’s Ribbon Run, Liz has some important reminders for women regarding breast cancer awareness. It’s crucial to know your personal risks, keep up with regular screenings, and maintain a healthy lifestyle. “No one cares more about your health than you,” she emphasized.

So, whether you plan to walk, run, or simply cheer from the sidelines, the Liz Hurley Ribbon Run on October 19 is a celebration of strength, community, and hope. Join in as Huntsville comes together not just to race, but to support a cause that truly makes a difference!
