HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The City of Huntsville has officially launched its new and improved transit system, introducing free rides on freshly established routes from the newly constructed Huntsville Transit building.
After extensive planning and feedback from community members, the Huntsville Transit system is making strides to improve accessibility for all riders. Current residents, including former city councilwoman Frances Akridge, were offered free rides this past Sunday to familiarize themselves with the new routes. “I think we underestimate just how much driving can take out of us,” Akridge stated.
Akridge also emphasized the joys of public transit, expressing excitement about having someone else drive her around, allowing her to enjoy the scenery. “Just to have someone take me safely to some place while I can frankly just look out the window… It’s good for us,” she remarked.
Public transit enthusiasts like Zane Breen were also on board, having followed the project closely for years. Breen noted, “I’ve really been missing that here,” referring to the non-car-dependent lifestyle many enjoy in other areas.
Next Sunday, the city will continue offering free rides, allowing residents to further explore their new transit options. The grand opening of the Huntsville Transit hub on Pratt Avenue is set for September 3.
As Huntsville steps into a new era of public transportation, residents can look forward to improved accessibility and convenience. The rollout of these services marks a significant milestone for the community, ensuring that public transit is not only available but also enjoyable for all citizens.
