This week, the food safety inspection scores from Huntsville and surrounding areas have made headlines for some surprising reasons. The spotlight shines brightest on Morgan County, where a local mini-mart has found itself with one of the lowest scores we’ve ever seen.
The A&M Cowboys mini-mart, located at Highway 36 & Kyle Road in Hartselle, received a score of 64. It’s not just a low score; it’s a shocking one, laden with several smaller violations that all added up. Inspectors pointed out issues that would make any food lover cringe. Some of the concerning findings included moldy soda nozzles, which, let’s face it, no one wants on their drink. Additionally, inspectors found cheese and pizza stored at improper temperatures. That’s a red flag!
But it doesn’t stop there. The report also highlighted improperly stored toxic chemicals, which should always be kept separate from food items to keep everyone safe. There were also some sanitation issues, such as one sink lacking hot water. And if that’s not enough, inspectors noted a shortage of soap and paper towels at another sink, which is vital for ensuring cleanliness in food preparation. To top off the findings, cookies in the freezer were found to have cross-contamination from freezer ice, a rather unnerving revelation!
Moving on to other local establishments in Morgan County, The Old Cookstove on Reeder Road in Danville wasn’t far behind, earning an 82 due to ham stored at the wrong temperature and a dirty can opener. It appears that food safety is certainly on the minds of inspectors this week!
Over in Colbert County, while they provided a handful of inspection scores going back to July, only 308 BBQ in Muscle Shoals received a score below satisfactory, landing at 83. No specific notes were mentioned, but it’s crucial for diners to stay informed about these reports.
Franklin County has also had its fair share of inspections with some interesting findings. Big Star Deli in Red Bay scored an 84, while Casa Fiesta, also in Red Bay, received an 81. They both faced scrutiny on the same day, September 4th. We’re eager to learn more about what contributed to these scores!
Food safety is always an important topic in our community, and it’s good to stay informed. This week’s scores remind us to support our local businesses while also ensuring they maintain a safe and clean environment for all. Let’s keep our fingers crossed for better results next time around!
