Huntsville Receives a Big Boost for Food Assistance

Huntsville is buzzing with good news as the local community joins hands to tackle food insecurity. The Food Bank of North Alabama received an impressive $100,000 donation from Publix Super Markets Charities, and this support couldn’t have come at a better time! This significant contribution will help with transportation needs related to the Food Bank’s mobile pantry program and other essential services across North Alabama.

A Surging Need for Assistance

Since last October, there has been a whopping 48 percent increase in food assistance requests in Madison County alone. That number is staggering, isn’t it? But the challenge doesn’t stop there! The other 11 counties served by the Food Bank, from Florence to Cullman to Ft. Payne, have seen a 28 percent increase in demand for food assistance as well. This growing need highlights just how critically important the Food Bank’s services are to our local communities.

Setting New Records

As we look ahead, the Food Bank of North Alabama is preparing to reach a major milestone by distributing 15 million pounds of food in its 2024 fiscal year. This impressive amount is equivalent to 12.5 million meals – setting a new record for the nonprofit organization. It’s heartening to see how such efforts are making a **real** difference in the lives of many individuals and families in need.

Creating Lasting Impact

Shirley Schofield, the CEO of the Food Bank, expressed sincere gratitude towards Publix Charities for their generous donation. “We are so grateful to Publix Charities for their donation,” she shared. “For 40 years, we have served the community, and support like this helps the Food Bank acquire the resources to ensure people have enough nutritious food. This investment will impact children, veterans, seniors, and working families for generations.” Her words underscore the spirit of community that everyone can appreciate.

Pulix Charities’ Ongoing Support

It’s worth noting that this $100,000 is part of a larger effort. Publix Super Markets Charities has donated a total of $525,000 to the Food Bank of North Alabama since 2021, showing a sustained commitment to fighting hunger in the region. In 2024 alone, Publix Charities is on track to contribute $11 million to various Feeding America partner food banks and nonprofits. This demonstrates their dedicated approach toward addressing food insecurity in the Southeastern United States.

Building Stronger Communities Together

Kevin Murphy, CEO of Publix, emphasized the importance of their philanthropic efforts. “At Publix, we believe providing food for our neighbors in need is our greatest opportunity to give back, and doing so is at the heart of our philanthropic efforts,” Murphy said enthusiastically. This dedication to community upliftment illustrates how powerful and collaborative efforts can create change.

The generous donation from Publix Super Markets Charities is indeed a bright spot for Huntsville and North Alabama, bringing hope and nourishment to many in need. As the Food Bank continues its vital work, local residents can appreciate and support these initiatives that help to feed hungry families. Together, we can make a positive impact—one meal at a time!
