The runoff election was held after neither candidate could secure a majority during the general election back in August 2024. In that initial race, Watkins had emerged in the lead but the lack of a clear winner meant that the stakes were raised for this recent face-off. On election night, the results rolled in, revealing that Watkins received a remarkable 2,278 votes against Keith’s 1,910.
Even more encouraging for local democracy, the voter turnout for the runoff reached 10.9%, a noticeable increase from the 7.9% seen in the general election. This trend suggests that community engagement is on the rise, reflecting the importance of local governance and the impact it holds for residents.
Watkins overcame not just electoral challenges, but also some personal encounters with the law. In 2018, she faced harassment charges from an incident that occurred during a community event, but she was acquitted. Meanwhile, her opponent had his own hurdles to navigate, including legal troubles stemming from a shoplifting arrest, which likely played a role in shaping voters’ opinions this election cycle.
Despite these challenges, Watkins remained focused on her mission: serving the community she has called home her entire life. With her background as a management and program analyst for the U.S. Army Garrison at Redstone Arsenal, combined with her degrees in Business Administration and Secondary Education from Alabama A&M University, Watkins brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to her new role. She has a rich history of community engagement, having served on the Huntsville City Board of Education and numerous local organizations.
Watkins is already setting her sights on the future, emphasizing her dedication to economic development and the overall enhancement of District 1.
