Huntsville Barber in Need of Heart Transplant Given One Year to Live

Corey Steger faces a race against time as he awaits a heart transplant

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – A Huntsville barber, Corey Steger, is grappling with a dire prognosis after doctors informed him that he has just one year to live without a heart transplant. The 52-year-old, co-owner of Rocket City Barbershop, is battling daily challenges due to his failing heart, which currently functions at only 15 percent capacity.

A Lifelong Journey and Struggle

Steger, who has been a pillar in the Huntsville community for over 30 years, was diagnosed with lupus over two decades ago. Unfortunately, the treatments he received for lupus led to severe damage to his heart. As a once active and healthy individual, Steger now grapples with breathing difficulties, painful walking, and a diminished appetite as he navigates his health crisis.

Facing the Reality of Time

Despite the grim prognosis, Steger is relying on his faith, family, and the support of the community to keep fighting for a chance at a longer life. With his heart functioning at a critically low level, Steger is currently awaiting placement on the list for a heart transplant. Regular trips to doctors in Birmingham and a cumbersome portable device to assist his heart’s function have become part of his daily routine.

Community Support and Fundraiser

Friends, family, and supporters of Steger are rallying together to assist him in this challenging time. A cookout fundraiser is scheduled to take place on June 29 at 2800 Jordan Lane in Huntsville at 1 p.m. Additionally, a GoFundMe campaign has been set up to help cover Steger’s medical expenses and the costs associated with his ongoing treatment.

Reflecting on Life and Loved Ones

Despite the emotional turmoil of facing mortality, Steger finds strength in the love of his wife, Nicky, their grandchildren, and the rest of his family. The outpouring of support from the community has shown him the impact he has made on others’ lives, giving him a renewed sense of purpose and determination to keep fighting for more time.

A Test of Resilience

As Steger waits for a chance at a new heart, he remains grateful for each day and the moments he shares with those he holds dear. While the road ahead is filled with uncertainty, his unwavering resolve and the unwavering support of his loved ones continue to fuel his fight against time.
