HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — If you’re planning to travel by air in the near future, it’s time to pay close attention to your ID! On a sunny Monday morning, travelers at Huntsville International Airport heard an important update from the Federal Security Director for Alabama, Tara Corse. She reminded everyone that a new, updated version of photo identification will be required to board flights starting next year.
So, what exactly is this new requirement? It’s called the REAL ID, which is an enhanced feature on your driver’s license or state-issued ID. Tara explained that the REAL ID is designed to promote better security when flying. “REAL ID is an enhanced security feature on your driver’s license or on your state I.D.,” Corse noted. “The REAL ID feature is ensuring that there is an enhanced security within that cannot be duplicated.”
You might have heard this new ID requirement referred to as the STAR ID here in Alabama. The STAR ID has a star-shaped emblem that appears in the upper corner, making it easy to identify. This feature has been popping up on qualifying IDs in Alabama for a few years now, but the push for everyone to upgrade isn’t quite finished yet.
Initially, the government had set a deadline to transition to REAL IDs by 2008, but that date has been extended multiple times. A mix of logistical challenges and the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic kept pushing the deadline. As it stands, travelers need to ensure they are compliant by May 7, 2025. Mark that date on your calendar!
Making the switch is quite simple! If you need to get your new REAL ID, just head over to your local Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) with a few key documents in hand. You’ll want to bring proof of identity, proof of your Social Security number, and two forms of proof of residence. Got those ready? Just ask for a REAL ID when you’re there!
Now, if you don’t have a REAL ID by the deadline, don’t panic! You can still travel by showing another form of federally compliant ID, such as your passport. So, if you have a valid passport, you’re good to go! However, remember that you will still need your passport for international travel, including trips to our neighbors in Canada or Mexico, as well as for international cruises.
For all the details about what forms of ID are acceptable, you can always check the DHS’s Real ID page. It’s wise to stay up-to-date so you won’t face any last-minute surprises at the airport.
In conclusion, the transition to REAL ID is an important step toward enhancing travel security. As the deadline approaches, make your plans to upgrade your ID—your future self will thank you on your next trip!
