Huntsville, Alabama, is buzzing with excitement as the North Alabama Homebuilding Academy (NAHA) takes a giant leap forward in heavy equipment training. With the recent installation of a cutting-edge CMLabs Heavy Equipment Simulator, students and recent graduates now have the fantastic opportunity to hone their skills in a safe and controlled environment.
Imagine being able to operate heavy machinery without the immediate pressure of working with actual equipment. This is exactly what NAHA is offering! The new simulator enables students to train on not just one but five different types of heavy machines. “It’s a chance to get on the equipment, learn the controls ahead of time, get comfortable,” said Tommy Davis, the Executive Director of NAHA. The simulator operates much like a thrilling 4-D ride at a theme park, providing movement and vibrations that mimic the real-life experience of using heavy machinery.
Installed just last month, the simulator has been a game-changer. Students are already reporting that their confidence soars after practicing on the simulator before transitioning to real equipment. “For the first time, this last week we had our students come and practice on the simulator first, before they went out to do the real equipment,” Davis shared. The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. Students felt significantly more prepared and relaxed when it came time to handle real heavy machinery.
During a recent visit to NAHA, we had the pleasure of meeting Renee Davie, a student actively engaged in the simulator learning how to operate a skid steer. “For what I do, I needed to have a little bit of experience and this is a great opportunity for that experience,” she explained. As the co-owner of North Alabama Projects, a handyman and home repair company, gaining this skill set could enable her to expand the services they offer.
Renee’s journey into the construction world reflects a long-held passion for working with her hands. Two years ago, she initially sought out NAHA while looking for trade school options for her son. To her surprise, she discovered a new path for herself. “I have always liked working with my hands, I decided to take the courses,” she noted proudly, after graduating from NAHA and mastering numerous homebuilding skills.
Renee goes on to recommend the program to anyone, regardless of their age or background, looking to kickstart a career in construction. After learning about the heavy equipment simulator through an email, she wasted no time signing up for training and is now thrilled with the time she’s dedicated to both the simulator and operating real equipment. “It was a little nerve-wracking; however, I felt more prepared than had I just stepped on the machine itself,” she confessed.
NAHA isn’t just focused on training individuals. They are also collaborating with local construction companies to offer simulator training for their employees. Companies interested in booking time on the simulator are encouraged to reach out to NAHA, which opens up even more avenues for skill development in the residential construction industry.
As this innovative training initiative continues to grow, NAHA proudly celebrated its 500th graduate recently, a significant milestone that highlights the academy’s commitment to shaping future professionals in the construction sector. For those wanting to enter the residential construction industry, NAHA provides a fantastic platform, offering hands-on, short-term training completely free of charge to dedicated individuals in north Alabama.
With updates like these, it’s clear that NAHA is not just teaching skills; they are fostering confident builders ready to take on the future!
