Green Mountain residents asked to conserve water for a second year in a row

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WAFF) – The new homes in Green Mountain are why the legacy residents are being asked to conserve water due to the pumps not being able to keep up.

Residents Express Frustration

“I am all for slow and steady growth but this is exploitation and enough is enough,” said Neeve Weinberger, a long-time resident of Green Mountain. Like many areas in Huntsville, things are developing fast in the Green Mountain area, and it upsets residents.

“Drastic changes since we moved up here,” said Weinberger. ”We moved here for privacy and wildlife and now we are surrounded by subdivisions and a road that has turned into a Hot Wheels track.”

Concerns Over Water Infrastructure

It is not the growth that bothers her it’s the request year after year to conserve water. “We learned in the meeting last year that there is one water line coming up to service everyone that lives on this mountain,” said Weinberger. “It’s old, it is an aging pumping system and we do not have the infrastructure to support all this growth.”

Fear for Safety

Developers say that it is safe, the city of Huntsville is doing a great job, and that this is a temporary non-issue but residents are concerned for their safety. “We had a house fire last November and we were fortunate enough that we could extinguish that fire with fire extinguishers but if we had had to rely on water pressure it could have turned out really differently,” said Weinberger.

Residents Reach Out to City Council

Residents have reached out time and time again but they say they are not being heard by the city council. “Profit speaks loud and clear to our leaders right now and I feel like the people who have lived here for a number of years who have been good stewards to our property are being penalized by lack of planning by the city,” Weinberger said.

No Response from City Officials

We have reached out to the Mayor Tommy Battle’s office, the Huntsville City Council and the Huntsville Fire Department. At this time of publication we have not heard back from these parties.
