Huntsville Rallies to Fight Hunger this Giving Tuesday

Huntsville, Ala. — As the spirit of giving fills the air, the Food Bank of North Alabama is stepping into the spotlight this upcoming Giving Tuesday, scheduled for December 3rd. This global event encourages individuals and communities to lend a hand to organizations that uplift those in need, and this year, the Food Bank is rallying the local community to join the fight against hunger.

A Call to Action from the Community

“The Food Bank of North Alabama is fortunate to be based in such a giving community,” expressed Shirley Schofield, the CEO of the Food Bank. Her enthusiasm is palpable as she recognizes the increasing demand for assistance: “This year’s Giving Tuesday is especially important to us because we’re seeing more and more people requiring help to access food for their families.”

The holiday season, more than ever, is critical for those facing food insecurity. With a worrying 24% increase in the need for food assistance since October 2023, the Food Bank is stepping up its game. Can you believe that over 184,000 people in the Food Bank’s 11-county service area are experiencing food insecurity? That includes a staggering over 50,000 individuals in just Madison County!

Help is on the Way

The Food Bank’s reach spans across counties including Colbert, Cullman, DeKalb, Franklin, Lauderdale, Lawrence, Limestone, Madison, Marshall, Morgan, and Jackson. These communities are surely in need of assistance, and the Food Bank is rolling out heavy artillery this Giving Tuesday.

In the 2024 fiscal year, the Food Bank distributed an incredible 15.1 million pounds of food, which translates to roughly 12.6 million meals provided to locals struggling to make ends meet. With a robust network of 230 partner organizations like food pantries, shelters, and programs specifically designed for children and women, the Food Bank is ensuring that help doesn’t just go to waste. Major partners contributing to the cause include Manna House, Downtown Rescue Mission, and the Salvation Army.

Generosity Goes a Long Way

As the generosity of locals pours in on Giving Tuesday, Schofield emphasizes the impact of every donation: “When people choose the Food Bank to give to during Giving Tuesday, it helps provide needed food for our programs that will stay right here in North Alabama.” Not only does your contribution make an immediate difference, but it also honors the Food Bank’s remarkable 40 years of service to the community.

Here’s a fun fact: for every dollar you donate, the Food Bank can provide 7 meals to those in dire need, especially during this holiday season. Can you imagine the difference your spare change can make?

The Global Impact of Giving Tuesday

Giving Tuesday is no small deal! It’s a global movement that encourages generosity, with millions of people participating worldwide. Just last year, Americans alone contributed a jaw-dropping $3.1 billion, and 34 million adults jumped in to help the cause according to Giving Tuesday Data Commons.

Remember, every action counts, whether you are donating your time, your money, or even other resources. The Food Bank of North Alabama invites everyone to join in and make a meaningful difference this December 3rd. Where there’s a will, there’s a way to make Huntsville a hunger-free city!
