Hey there, Athens residents! If you’re on the lookout for some fun and engaging events happening around town this weekend, you’re in for a treat! The forecast is delivering plenty of sunshine with a high of 82°F and a low of 53°F, so it’s the perfect time to step outside and join in on all the community activities lined up for October 12th.
Kicking off the day bright and early, the AMVETS Post 21 is hosting their much-anticipated Veterans Breakfast! This special gathering will take place from 7 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. at 22769 Black Road. This year, veterans and first responders can enjoy a hearty breakfast for free—so don’t miss out! And if you’re not a veteran? You can still enjoy a delicious meal for just $10. It’s a great way to support our heroes and mingle with the community!
Feeling a bit adventurous? Swing by the Athens-Limestone County Public Library on October 10th at 6 p.m. for a meet-and-greet with local author Allen Sircy. Known for his works on the paranormal, Sircy is sure to delight those looking for a spine-tingling time. It’s a great opportunity to discuss ghost stories, share your own spooky experiences, and pick up a few books to get you in the Halloween spirit!
On the same day as the breakfast, the Pink Lady Walk will be celebrating its 10th anniversary at Big Spring Memorial Park. The 5k walk/run kicks off at 8 a.m. and is dedicated to raising awareness about breast cancer awareness and the significance of early detection. If you wish to join this wonderful cause, you can find more details on their website or call (256)-874-5637.
If you are interested in fostering the next generation of informed voters, join the Limestone County NAACP for their monthly STEPS Book Club on October 12th from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. This month’s theme is “Future Voters”, and it’s a perfect chance for parents and kids (from pre-school through eighth grade) to learn about voter awareness over brunch! To find out more or to register, visit their website or call (256)-216-5668.
For all the plant and nature lovers out there, the Alabama Master Gardeners are hosting a free lesson on how to welcome wildlife into your yard. Swing by 1109 W. Market St. at 10 a.m. on the 12th and discover ways to nurture a vibrant ecosystem right in your backyard. For further details, contact Betty Patterson via email.
Join the “I’m an Overcomer of Addiction Celebration” on the same day at 4 p.m. at New Beginnings M.B. Church. This uplifting event is open to the public and aims to bring hope and awareness about overcoming addiction in our community. If you have questions, feel free to get in touch with Latimer Dobbins.
With so much happening this weekend, Athens is buzzing with excitement and community spirit. Remember to wear your sunscreen, stay hydrated, and enjoy all the activities our wonderful town has to offer. Whether you’re connecting with fellow veterans, raising awareness for a cause, or simply enjoying nature, there’s something for everyone! See you around!
