Huntsville, Alabama, has faced quite a challenge this past month with the weather. October turned out to be a super dry month for the entire Tennessee Valley. With minimal rainfall, Huntsville’s conditions have gone from dry to moderate, severe, and even extreme drought levels. It’s been one of those years when many of us have looked at the sky and wished for a good soaking rain!
Typically, October is one of the drier months for us, ranking as the third driest month overall. This year, though, Huntsville received only 0.53 inches of rain, making it the 10th driest October on record. To give you some context, we should normally see about 3.56 inches of rainfall this time of year. So, we’re talking about a significant deficit of three inches below normal!
Even with the lack of rain, things have been quite warm. The average temperature for the month was around 67 degrees, which is over three degrees warmer than we’re used to. This warm trend was felt across the entire Tennessee Valley, with nearby Decatur logging an average of 65.6 degrees, marking the third warmest October on record for that area.
The end of the month saw a cold front move through on Halloween, bringing just a bit of much-needed rain. However, the drops weren’t enough to significantly change our drought situation. While we’ll all remember that Halloween spent rushing from house to house in our costumes, meteorologists were keeping an eye on how much moisture the region actually received.
As we flip the calendar over to November, we’re looking at an average rainfall expectation of 4.25 inches and average temperatures around 52.5 degrees. The temperature records indicate that 2015 saw the warmest November at 58.8 degrees. And guess what? It looks like we might continue to experience this unseasonably warm weather into the new month!
The Climate Prediction Center points to a possibility of warmer-than-average temperatures this November. This could be connected to the phenomenon known as La Niña, which tends to keep things a bit warmer for the Tennessee Valley, adding to our current weather woes.
As for rainfall predictions, November’s forecast shows an equal chance of below or above-average precipitation. This is particularly important since, historically, the fall season tends to bring on severe weather. This month is actually the peak for tornadoes, with Alabama seeing a staggering 293 tornadoes since records began in 1950.
It’s crucial for everyone in the area to take this seriously and have a severe weather plan ready to go. It might be a good time to put together a safety kit and think about how to stay safe should severe weather hit.
In conclusion, Huntsville is battling some serious drought challenges as we transition into November. While the warm weather might feel pleasant, the lack of rain is certainly something to keep an eye on. Let’s hope this month brings a bit more moisture our way, and remember to be prepared for any wild weather we might encounter!
